link

An informed source said on Tuesday that the commander of the Iranian Quds Force had arrived in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on a "secret" visit.

This visit comes hours after US President Joe Biden announced the end of his forces' "combat" missions in Iraq.

The source told Shafaq News Agency, that the commander of the Iranian Quds Force, General Ismail Qaani, arrived today in Baghdad on a secret and unannounced visit, indicating that the visit comes in order to meet with a number of political forces and armed factions for the purpose of discussing the latest Iraqi-American agreement, What took place between Al-Kazemi and Badin regarding the total US withdrawal from Iraq.

The "Shiite" political forces welcomed the results of the negotiations conducted by an Iraqi delegation in the US capital, Washington, which resulted in a declaration by US President Joe Biden that "the combat missions are over" in Iraq.

And US President Joe Biden announced, during a meeting yesterday, Monday, with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, that the United States will end by the end of the year its "combat mission" in Iraq to begin a "new phase" of military cooperation with this country.

Al-Kazemi arrived yesterday (Sunday, July 25) at the head of a high-level delegation that includes the ministers of foreign affairs, defense, oil, trade and culture, to the American capital, Washington, on an official visit.

Qaani had visited Baghdad on the ninth of last June, and held extensive meetings with government and political parties and armed Shiite factions for the purpose of discussing the situation on the Iraqi arena.

The United Nations Compensation Commission pays $600 million to a Kuwaiti oil company in compensation for the invasion of Iraq

link

A United Nations committee paid $600 million to the Kuwait National Oil Company, today, Tuesday, in compensation for Iraq's invasion and occupation of Kuwait three decades ago.

The United Nations Compensation Commission said it has paid governments and international organizations so far $51.3 billion since the approval of 1.5 million claims related to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.

KPC succeeded in claiming $14.7 billion in oil production and sales losses resulting from damage to the country's oil fields during the 1990-1991 invasion and occupation that led to the US-led "Gulf War".

The company is the only remaining claimant, and expects to receive another $1.1 billion.

Under the UN Security Council resolution issued in 1991, Iraq allocated a percentage of its oil export revenues to the Compensation Fund, and the committee indicated that this share is currently set at 3%.

At the current payment rate, the last installment is expected to be paid within a year.

Al-Kazemi: The Baghdad-Washington relationship will turn to a new stage

link

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi praised, on Tuesday, his country's strategic relationship with the United States of America.

Al-Kadhimi said, during an interview with Al-Iraqiya Al-Akhbariya, "The relationship between Iraq and the United States will turn into a new stage, and our role in the region has become pivotal."

The Iraqi Prime Minister stressed that the security forces are able to protect the country, calling for the need to work to restore the state's prestige and create a safe environment for investment.

Al-Kazemi added that the most important achievement in the strategic dialogue between Baghdad and Washington is that it unified the positions of the Iraqi political forces, and continued, "Coordination between Iraq and the United States will not be limited to the security aspect."

Within the fourth and final round of the strategic dialogue with Washington, Iraq ended the complex debate over the fate of its combat forces in the Arab country and the scheduling of their complete withdrawal.

The results of scheduling the strategic framework came, after a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, last Monday, with the end of the presence of those forces and their complete withdrawal by the end of this year, and limited support to Iraq through groups of American elements specialized in training and advice.
Although the political and official circles saw the agreement as a historic decision and a negotiating round, from which Iraq came out with the lion's share, this did not reduce the level of fears that Iran was alone in that scene and its influence penetrated further into the Iraqi interior.

Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi spoke during his meeting with the Businessmen Forum and the American Chamber of Commerce, indicating to them that Iraq's doors are open to investment, and American companies in particular.

He added, "The Iraqi government has taken bold measures towards real reforms in the economy, the most important of which is strengthening credit activity in the banking sector, and we have begun to address weak infrastructure despite the budget deficit, by encouraging private sector investments."

He continued, "The government has put forward clean energy projects through competitive and transparent bidding, which resulted in attracting the largest international companies in the field of solar energy, and we are now in negotiations with the largest international companies to grant 7,500 megawatts in the field of solar energy during the next two years."

And Al-Kazemi said, "The government has begun to address the housing crisis through a package of measures, the most important of which is the initiative of government banks, and a number of private banks to offer low-cost and long-term loans to support the purchase of housing units, and this will also help encourage investment in the real estate sector, and this initiative helped activate a number of discontinued projects.

He stated that "corruption is being fought and state resources are preserved, and one of the most important measures is the cancellation of licenses in fake and lagging projects that are behind the mafias of economic and political corruption," noting, " In a short period, we have achieved great progress in the investment sector, and there is great work in the field of oil and energy." and clean energy in particular. We have launched strategic projects in the field of gas and the investment of associated gas, in cooperation with American companies."

He also said that "Iraq's doors are open to investment, and American companies in particular, and our vision is serious in relying on Western investments instead of others, and we need your cooperation in order to achieve this."

Secret visits accompanied by attacks.. Militias reveal Iran's "code" in Iraq

link

2122803.jpeg

A direct relationship between the secret visits of Iranian officials to Iraq, and the militia attacks on American interests in the country, the code of which is revealed by the Katyusha missiles.

The attacks precede or follow the visit of Iranian officials, but they do not cease to coincide with the visit of the commander of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, or the head of intelligence.

The new episode in the series of Iranian tampering with the security of Iraq is the targeting of the vicinity of the American embassy in Baghdad with two Katyusha missiles, two days after a secret and unannounced visit of the Iranian Quds Force commander, Ismail Qaani, to Baghdad.

The attack also coincides with the return of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi from Washington after a visit in which it was agreed to end the "combat mission" of the United States in Iraq by the end of the year, amid dissatisfaction among the militias loyal to Iran, for the withdrawal.

And just two weeks ago, the militias intensified their attacks on the American forces, targeting the Taji camp and the Green Zone in Baghdad, while Qaani was also on a "secret" visit to Iraq.

Qaani’s four visits so far to Baghdad since he assumed the leadership of the Quds Force, succeeding the slain General Qassem Soleimani, and the militias’ celebration of it by launching missiles that do not leave victims, in which analysts read double messages, part of which is directed to support the militias, and the other to pressure the Al-Kazemi government to influence him in Take any step towards the future of armed groups, and the fate of US forces in the country.

In the first week of this month, the militias targeted Washington’s interests in Iraq, and 3 drones carrying explosive materials attacked a base located near the US embassy in the capital, Baghdad, and at that time, the head of the Revolutionary Guards’ intelligence service, Hussein Taeb, was visiting the Iraqi capital, and he met the leaders of the loyal factions. for Tehran.

A convoy of the international coalition was also attacked with explosive devices in southern Iraq, followed by the targeting with 3 missiles of the Ain al-Assad base, where US forces are located in the west of the country, coinciding with Taeb's visit.

The circumstances of Taeb's visit are similar to Qaani's visit last June, when the bombing of Baghdad Airport was targeted by a drone, preceded by another missile attack on Balad Air Base, north of the Iraqi capital.

However, what is remarkable is that all the aforementioned attacks have a common denominator, which is that they do not cause casualties, nor significant losses; This suggests that the militias are sending messages through a media echo; To put some kind of pressure on Al-Kazemi before and after his visit to Washington.

In addition, the militias fear a devastating US response in the event of casualties, as happened when an American retired was killed in December 2019, in an attack on a camp in the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq.

At the time, Washington responded with raids targeting sites of pro-Iranian factions near the Syrian border, which resulted in 20 deaths and heavy losses, which Tehran and its militias fear in Iraq.

The code of the Iranian messages, then, has become exposed to all; Targeting American interests without causing casualties, and without hitting the target accurately, to pressure the Iraqi government to overlook the militia’s uncontrolled weapons, and leave the rope to the west for the political influence of its arms in the partisan scene, then the skirmish with Washington to confirm Tehran’s rejection of foreign forces staying in the neighboring country.

Iran: Arab countries have started our commercial competition in Iraq

link    more reasons for Iran to not want Iraq to open up to the world

The economic advisor to Iran in Iraq, Abdul Amir Rabihawi, said that Iran's commercial competitors in the Iraqi market are constantly increasing .

Rabihawi said in a meeting with businessmen in Kermanshan province via the Internet, according to what the official Iranian news agency "IRNA" reported today, Thursday, that in the past, Turkey and China were only Iran's commercial competitors in Iraq, but now the Arab countries in the region, such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Jordan , joined Iran's competitors in the Iraqi market

He added that setting restrictive laws and the willingness of Iraqi decision makers to cooperate with Arab countries in the region are among the factors that enhance competition in the Iraqi market .

The Iranian economic advisor said that the Iraqi market today is completely different from 2003, adding that in the early years when we resumed trade with Iraq, the country was in dire need of Iranian goods

He pointed out that Iraq's revenues come from oil sales, indicating that the decline in oil prices in the market and the decline in the country's revenues led to the imposition of restrictions on imports .

Rabehawi stressed the need for direct transportation from Khosravi and Mahran crossings to Iraqi territory, saying that Iraq chose these two ports for goods transit, and at the end of this month, rules and controls for crossing across these borders will be implemented .

He stressed the need to import goods from Iraq to find a balance in the balance of trade exchange between the two countries, noting that the trade balance with Iraq now amounts to 9 billion dollars in favor of exports

The epic of Gilgamesh returns to the arms of Iraq
10:50 - 07/28/2021
Mawazine News

The US government announced that it had returned to Iraq, on Tuesday, a painting listing the epic of Gilgamesh, after its confiscation had been verified.

"The painting is more than 3,500 years old," the Reuters news agency quoted a US Department of Justice statement as saying.

"The painting was seized by the US Department of Justice in 2019, two years after billionaire David Green, owner of the Hobby Lobby chain, opened the Museum of Ancient Christian History in downtown Washington," the statement said.

He pointed out that "the piece that tells of the dream sequence from the epic in Akkadian cuneiform script, is one of many ancient artifacts from Iraq and the Middle East collected by David Green."

According to the Department of Justice, Hobby Lobby purchased the 6-inch by 5-inch tablet, known as the "Gilgamesh Dream Board," from a prominent auction house in 2014 for $1.67 million that was originally brought illegally into the United States in 2003. by a merchant who bought it in London from a Jordanian merchant known for the antiquities of the Middle East.

The tablet was one of thousands of artifacts of Iraqi origin, mostly cuneiform tablets and seals between 3,000 and 4,000 years old, that were seized from the Hobby Lobby and the Museum of the Bible for return to Iraq.

‘Unprecedented’ restitution: US returns antiquities to Iraq

The 17,000 items date back 4,000 years and will be flown back to Iraq with Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

28 Jul 2021

The United States will return to Iraq some 17,000 archaeological treasures dating back 4,000 years and looted in recent decades in an “unprecedented” restitution, the culture minister in Baghdad has said.

Wednesday’s announcement came days after Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi met with US President Joe Biden in Washington, DC.

Al-Kadhimi was set to take back the artefacts from ancient Mesopotamia on his aircraft when he returns to the country on Thursday, Iraqi Culture Minister Hassan Nazim said.

“This is the largest return of antiquities to Iraq,” said Nazim, hailing the decision as “the result of months of efforts by the Iraqi authorities in conjunction with their embassy in Washington, DC. Most of the ancient pieces document “the commercial exchanges during the Sumerian period”, his ministry said in a statement. Most of Iraq’s antiquities have been extensively looted during decades of war and armed uprisings, often by organised crime groups, since the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

“It is impossible to quantify the number of pieces that have been stolen from archaeological sites,” Qahtan al-Obaid, director of antiquities and heritage at the Basra Museum, told the AFP news agency . . Archaeological sites across the country have been severely damaged and neglected, and museums looted, with some 15,000 pieces stolen from Iraq’s only national museum in Baghdad.
“I hope that in the near future we will be able to recover the rest of our goods, especially in Europe,” said Nazim in his statement. Among the pieces to be returned to Iraq is a 3,500-year-old clay tablet with a sequence from the epic of Gilgamesh, which once sat in Washington’s Museum of the Bible, the US Department of Justice said separately in Washington.
It was not immediately clear whether the “Gilgamesh Dream Tablet” would be among the 17,000 pieces to be returned this week. The rare fragment, which recounts a dream sequence from the epic in Akkadian cuneiform script, is one of many ancient artefacts from the Middle East collected by David Green, the billionaire owner of the Hobby Lobby chain of arts and crafts store.
