World Bank: Oil developing countries will achieve 4% growth led by Iraq

link

The World Bank expected that developing oil-exporting countries are expected to join the Gulf Cooperation Council and achieve growth, but at lower levels, with expectations that 2022 will witness a rise in growth rates to 4.1%, led by Iraq, with growth reaching 2.7% in 2023.

The World Bank added, in the latest report on economic developments in the Middle East and North Africa, entitled "Enhancing Transparency and Accountability in the Region", that the economies of the Middle East and North Africa region will grow by 5.5% in 2022, to record the fastest growth rate since 2016, to reach The pace of growth to 3.5% in 2023, while it is estimated that growth in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries will accelerate to 6.9% in 2022, driven by hydrocarbon exports, with a growth rate of 3.7% in 2023.

The report pointed out that growth is uneven across the region as countries that are still striving to overcome the lasting effects of the “Covid-19” pandemic, are facing new shocks due to high oil and food prices due to global geopolitical tensions, high global interest rates as well as The slowdown in the economies of the United States, China and the Eurozone.

The report indicated that for developing oil-importing countries, it is expected to achieve a growth of 4.5% in 2022 and 4.3% in 2023, and Egypt leads this group, recording a growth of 6.6% in the fiscal year ending in June, driven by gas exports, communications and tourism.

The report concluded that the oil-exporting countries in the region will benefit from the high prices of hydrocarbons (oil and gas), while the oil-importing countries in the region face adverse conditions, as they suffer from increased pressures and risks as a result of high import bills, especially food and energy imports, and the shrinking space available for spending in their public finances. .

The report emphasized that slow economic growth in the United States and China and the possibility of recession in Europe pose risks, especially in oil-importing developing countries that rely more on tourism and external demand from Europe, as this group of countries depends more on trade with the euro area, especially countries Importing oil in North Africa and geographically closest to Europe.

The report pointed out that policy makers throughout the region have introduced some measures, especially price controls, subsidies and subsidies, to reduce the salty prices of certain commodities such as food and energy compared to their international prices, noting that this matter had an impact in keeping inflation in the region lower than in other regions. He pointed out that the average inflation in Egypt during the period from March to last July amounted to 14.3%, although it would have been higher at 18.4% if the competent authorities had not intervened.

The report pointed out that the governments of the region will continue to incur additional expenditures to increase subsidies and cash transfers to mitigate the damage to the living standards of their residents due to the rise in food and energy prices globally, while for the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and developing oil-exporting countries, this is not a major concern. Currently, as unexpected revenue increases due to higher hydrocarbon prices have significantly increased fiscal space and will lead to fiscal surpluses for most oil-exporting countries in 2022, even after increased spending on inflation mitigation programmes.

The report expected an acceleration in the per capita real GDP growth for the region to 3.9% in 2022, before declining to 2% in 2023, but this growth varies between groups of countries, and it is expected that the growth rate of per capita GDP will accelerate In the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, it will reach 5.5% in 2022, while the growth rate will reach 2.5% for the developing oil-exporting countries in the same year.

The report pointed out that for oil-importing developing countries, the per capita GDP growth rate is expected to remain at about 2.9 percent in 2022, and 2.7 percent in 2023.

The report expected that the current account balances and public finances for the Middle East and North Africa region will improve significantly in 2022, to reach 10.5% and 1.9%, respectively, driven by the rise in hydrocarbon prices. In the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, the current account balance is expected to rise to 17.2% in 2022, and 14.6% in 2023, from 7.9% in 2021. WAM

He continued, "The budget will be loaded with many positives that can be in the interest of the citizen without affecting the central bank's reserves, after the difficult conditions that the country experienced during the Corona pandemic and the drop in global oil prices, which led the country to borrow."

International banks: Oil will catch fire after the “OPEC +” decision, and exceed $110

link

International banks expected, on Thursday, that oil prices would ignite after the recent “OPEC +” decision, to exceed $110 a barrel.

The expectations of oil prices, which have witnessed many cuts in recent weeks, in light of expectations of a decline in demand in light of the economic slowdown and inflation that are plaguing the markets, after the largest OPEC + production cut from 2020.

This comes while markets are awaiting Washington's reaction to the decision to cut, which the US President believes was not necessary, as he accused the group that it did not take into account global conditions and that the decision came in the interest of Russia.

US investment bank Goldman Sachs raised its forecast for the price of Brent oil for the fourth quarter by $10 a barrel to $110, according to a note from several analysts.

"All the developments we've seen on the supply side at this point are pretty much setting the stage for what we think will be higher prices at the end of this year," Damien Corvalin, head of energy research, told Bloomberg TV.

The adjustment comes as a result of OPEC+'s decision to cut oil production by 2 million barrels per day from November, and the note states that OPEC+ plans to cut production by 2 million barrels per day, which is a real decrease of 1.2 million barrels per day compared to the bank's forecast for November.

US investment bank Goldman Sachs said the price is likely to rise further if the production plan is adhered to and market conditions continue to improve.

Goldman Sachs believes the cut makes sense, albeit exceptional, as it increases the oil group's revenue with the least amount of sacrifice in future profits.

Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS)

"Brent crude will find its way to $100 a barrel faster than we previously expected after the OPEC+ move," Morgan Stanley analysts including Martin Ratts said in a note.

US Senator: The Kurds are our allies, and Iran's attacks on the region are dangerous

link

On Thursday, US Senator Chris Van Hollen described the Iranian attacks on Kurdistan Region as a "dangerous development", stressing the importance of the United States continuing to support "our Kurdish allies", whom he described as "key partners".

In an interview with the Kurdish service on "Voice of America" radio, translated by Shafak News Agency, Houlin, who is also the Democratic member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, responded to a question about the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' bombing of areas in Kurdistan Region with missiles and drones, and how dangerous that is. On regional stability, he said, "Well, it's a serious matter, and it's a violation of Iraq's sovereignty in terms of the Iranian government's overstepping the border and attacking positions and people on the Iraqi side."

"The Iraqi government and the United States have been very clear that these violations of sovereignty must end," he said.

Iranian bombing and Turkish incursion

Hollin said that the Iranian regime "should only blame itself for the escalation of peaceful protests because of its suppression of the Iranian people, and should not try to export that to Iraq."

He added that the United States should do everything in its power to protect Iraq's sovereignty.

In response to a question regarding Turkish incursions and bombing as well, the US senator said that Turkish forces have been launching attacks for months in the regions of the region, where many innocent people were killed, adding, "Everyone outside Iraq must put an end to their violations of Iraq's sovereignty. American forces are there at the invitation of the The government of Iraq, but these other external powers do not."

On the targeting of the US consulate in Erbil with bombing and threats by Iranian-backed militias and what the United States must do in order to support its ally, the KRG, Hollin said, "The United States was doing two things, the first is to support the Iraqi government, where we now have the constant challenge in forming We are working with the parties to try to resolve that."

"But we also need to continue to support our Kurdish allies, who have been a key partner in the fight against ISIS and others in the region who are malign actors," the US senator added.

Hollin said that Washington "has provided continuous support and training to the Kurdish forces, but it is also clear in the context of supporting the Iraqi army in general."

Iran protests

Regarding US President Joe Biden's release on Monday of a statement about taking further action against perpetrators of violence in Iran, Hollin said, "I think what the Biden administration will continue to do is look for entities that are part of this network that is suppressing peaceful protests." in such a brutal way."

On Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Iranian officials accusing the United States and Israel of plotting the ongoing protests in Iran, Hollin said, "This is laughable, and Iran has a habit of pointing fingers at others when they need to look in the mirror."

He added, "These protests are a natural result of the absolute deprivation of people's basic human rights. There is a regime that continues to suppress those human rights, in order to deprive women of basic freedoms, and therefore it is natural for there to be this kind of reaction from people seeking to be free." .

The US senator added, "I think that the United States maintains an open line of communication with civil society inside Iran to the extent that we can communicate with civil society groups inside Iran."

But he said, "If you're asking me whether or not the administration should adopt a policy of public regime change, I think the administration is on the right track at the moment. And if you look at the situation on the ground, I think the Biden administration is responding as it should."

And whether the United States would help the Iranian people bring down this regime, Hollin said, "I personally would like to see this regime go. The question is how will things go? And if the Iranians want to do it themselves, that is the question they have to decide. But what The United States should be careful not to do it is to suggest that, for example, we will use our military or our power to try to replace the regime in Iran."

On the impact of the Iranian protests on the position of many American representatives from both political parties who demanded that the Biden administration stop its talks with Iran in order to revive the nuclear agreement, Hollin said, "I do not support moving away from trying to reach a diplomatic solution that prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon... The question is How to achieve this goal? There are those who would like to go to war in the region. But my view, and I am aware of President Biden's view, is that we will all be better off if this goal is achieved peacefully."

Iran's role in Iraq

The US senator continued, saying, "Iran's malign actions in Iraq are taking place now in the absence of the (nuclear) Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and their actions in Iraq have increased dramatically after President Donald Trump tore up the JCPOA, and Iran has become more aggressive in Iraq."

The US senator concluded by recalling that in the middle of the Cold War, former President Ronald Reagan launched an "evil empire" on the Soviet Union, but he negotiated with Moscow an agreement to limit nuclear weapons, as at that time it was in our interest, and it is certainly in our interest to prevent Iran from Possession of a nuclear weapon, and it is in our interest to stand by the Iranian people and support them in their war against oppression."
