The expected path of the Iraqi economy

The expected path of the Iraqi economy

Yasser Metwally

: The expectations of economists and those interested in economic affairs, including me, are based on the indicators that appear on the ground.

In order to build our expectations about the path of the Iraqi economy, we must read and analyze the indicators to complete the picture of the future of the Iraqi economy.

The video for this blogpost is below here:

The broad and long-term package of decisions and measures that the government has taken and is still taking in the context of the path of economic reform attempts are the indicators that we rely on in reading and forecasting the future.

The size of the accumulated distortions in the structure of the Iraqi economy requires a huge amount of measures to correct the course, and this is what Al-Sudani’s government has adopted during its short life, and certainly the results need some time for the citizen to see them.

Perhaps this package of decisions and procedures contains many advantages, but it is not without disadvantages, based on the principle that no work can be 100% complete, as it may contain some errors, and this is clearly evident in implementation.

How can we weigh the advantages over the disadvantages? Achieving this principle depends on the quality and volume of follow-up and sustainable monitoring of implementation processes.

In the midst of this amount of measures, which are absolutely required due to our delay in correcting the course of the economy, some mistakes will appear and some will address them without focusing on the positives and the results achieved, and this is a strange culture among some short-sighted people.

According to this perspective, the expected path of the Iraqi economy bodes well and is a relief, if these measures and decisions are implemented well. It is noted that the government is serious about achieving the goals set out in its program.

Perhaps the optimism indicator for our expectations lies in the unity of objectives for most corrective decisions and measures and their interconnectedness.

To give an example of this trend, the decisions to reform the banking sector, in parallel with supporting the Iraqi private sector and involving it in implementing some important projects, while considering correcting the tax policy, draw before you a picture of the encouraging path to achieve development based on the unity and interconnectedness of the sectors concerned with achieving it through a package of decisions and procedures.

If we add to it, in the other corner, the activation of the services sector, especially in attempts to resolve congestion and provide the time required for the speed of work and achievement, then the interconnection between the path of the sectors at a parallel pace establishes a correct and clear path confirmed by the percentage of achievement in the investment budget that is being achieved for the first time in two decades, in which the percentages of achievement of the planned investment projects match the implemented investment projects.

We do not forget that such a great achievement may not be without obstacles and requires sufficient time to achieve the goal of the decisions and procedures.

The most important indicator, in my opinion, is that despite all the attempts to put obstacles in the way of economic development, intentionally or unintentionally, the government is moving forward with its program, leaving all attempts at obstruction in its wake, and this is one of the secrets of success and the key to hope.

As an observer of economic affairs, I sense citizens’ satisfaction and comfort, whether in public meetings and private conversations or in their comments on social media platforms regarding new trends and their sense of the reality and importance of ongoing measures.

We hope for the best, God willing

Third: The Supreme Military Authority is committed to formulating the necessary procedures to achieve what is stated in the above paragraphs, and the timing and mechanisms for their implementation, including procedures to ensure the physical protection of coalition advisors present in Iraq during the transitional period, in accordance with the Iraqi constitution and laws. Practical steps to implement these obligations have begun.

Advisor to the Prime Minister rules out a decline in gold prices in the coming period..and explains the reasons

The economic advisor to the Prime Minister, Mazhar Muhammad Salih, ruled out a decline in gold prices in the coming period.

Saleh told Al Furat News Agency: “The global financial markets, including futures markets in particular, are a place or market for information before anything else, and their efficiency is in the sufficiency of their information. Therefore, they are the vital field in which the forces of financial speculation play their role and look forward to quick profit and avoiding losses when maximizing their wealth and preserving their financial capital accumulation. In this regard, they possess the tools, standards and predictive indicators produced by the aforementioned information markets, so that the forces of speculation can make their decisions according to their predictions about the nature and speed of change in asset cycles witnessed by the oil markets, gold markets and other important metals to avoid loss and maximize profit when managing their investment portfolios.”

He explained that "the shift from short positions to long positions or vice versa in the activity of buying and selling financial assets, especially those related to speculation in raw materials or metals, specifically (gold and oil), is today taking an accelerated form in the speculative activity in these financial markets, as speculators' holdings change from one moment to another."

He explained that "any change in the centers of selling {gold and oil} and buying financial assets, especially those linked to assets of oil, gold, other metals and currencies, as their investment decisions today are mostly subject to at least four factors: First, the geopolitical factor, especially the upcoming raging winter war on the Russian-Ukrainian front, second, the dangerous geopolitical situation in the Middle East as a hub for oil and energy in the world, and third, the imminent announcement of the formation of the new international currency system (BRICS), as information shows that the new currency system may adopt the traditional gold standard in the basics of the stability of that international currency (BRICS currency)."

Saleh pointed out that "BRICS countries have an importance in the international economy estimated at about 35% of the global gross domestic product and dominate half of global trade at the same time."

He continued, "As for the last factor, the petrodollar and its fluctuations with OPEC+ decisions regarding opportunities to discipline the supply of crude oil in the international market, as oil price increases often lead to fluctuations in the value of the dollar and the demand for it for the purposes of financing global trade and oil in particular, which is governed in terms of market value by federal interest rates and the general monetary policy of the United States of America."

He stressed that "all these factors governed by the growth in the global economy drive the current fluctuations between oil prices, gold prices and other assets, whether instantaneous or directional fluctuations," noting at the same time that "the cycle of gold assets in their rise and fall is one of the slow cycles, so gold was and still is a safe haven in hedging against unexpected losses and others when maintaining financial wealth. Thus, we may not expect gold prices to fall or a reversal in its price trend during the coming period, despite the daily adaptive fluctuations in the prices of the yellow metal."

The repercussions of Nasrallah’s assassination and current economic challenges.. Iraq is no exception

link

Economic expert Nabil Jabbar Al-Tamimi revealed, today, Saturday (September 28, 2024), the possibility of Iraq being affected economically if trade with Lebanon stops during the next stage .

Al-Tamimi told Baghdad Today, "The volume of trade between Iraq and Lebanon and the volume of imports may not exceed 150 million dollars annually, which is a very small and ineffective number if commercial supplies between Iraq and Lebanon are cut off and trade stops ."

He added, "Iraq can easily find an alternative to Lebanon in the coming few days, if imports from Lebanon stop completely due to the security developments there ."

Al-Tamimi continued, "The most imported goods from Lebanon are fruits, and this can be closed through Turkey, Egypt, or other countries, if imports stop, considering that the war taking place in Lebanon is within a limited geographical area, and this does not affect the trade process ."

The economic expert confirmed that "Iraq will not be affected economically if a wider war breaks out in Lebanon. It may face some obstacles in the fruit and vegetable trade, but they will quickly find an alternative and it is not economically harmful to Iraq."

As for the economic expert, Othman Karim, he explained the reasons for the impact of the Lebanese crisis on the Kurdistan Region, pointing out that the volume of trade between the two parties is very limited due to the geographical distance

Speaking to Baghdad Today on Saturday (September 28, 2024), Karim said, "The Kurdistan Region will remain immune to the direct impact of the situation in Lebanon, unless things develop in the region and Iran enters into a direct conflict ."

Karim added that "the Kurdistan region depends heavily, up to 70%, on importing goods from Iran ."

He pointed out that "the tense situations in Lebanon and Gaza may lead to an increase in the prices of imported materials, not only in Kurdistan, but in Iraq as a whole ."

These warnings come amid fears of the repercussions of successive regional crises, as any further escalation in the region could significantly affect trade and markets in Kurdistan .

Earlier today, Saturday, the Israeli army announced that it had succeeded in assassinating Nasrallah, in an air strike on the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Friday evening, launched by Israeli F-35 fighter jets on a site in the Haret Hreik area in the southern suburb of Beirut, the main stronghold of Hezbollah, and later Hezbollah admitted to assassinating Nasrallah .

Since September 23, the Israeli army has been launching the most violent and extensive attack on Lebanon since the beginning of the confrontations with Hezbollah on October 8, which has resulted in 1,640 martyrs, including children and women, and 8,408 wounded, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, until Saturday morning.

Barzani's party links census to implementation of Article 140 and return of Kurds

The head of th
e Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc in Kirkuk Provincial Council, Hassan Majeed, stressed on Saturday the implementation of Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution according to its legal clauses, which will contribute to solving many of the outstanding problems before conducting the population census in the province, noting that the bloc's presence in the provincial council meetings is linked to a decision by the Federal Court.

Majeed said in a press interview that "Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution is an article that was included in the constitution to find solutions for the disputed areas according to stages, which are compensation, normalization, and census, as there are hundreds of displaced people to this day who have not received their financial compensation, which means that there are matters that have not been fully implemented in Kirkuk and the rest of the areas in which demographic changes took place by the Baath government."

He stressed that "Kirkuk has issues that must be taken into consideration by the federal government, as the Kurds were displaced from it by previous governments and more than 4,500 Kurdish villages were destroyed in Kirkuk, its outskirts and other areas. This means that there are residents who left Kirkuk and must be returned to Kirkuk to become part of it and they are its original residents, for the purpose of including them in the census."

He continued that "the population census is important for any country, including Iraq, because it provides a comprehensive information base for youth, women and children according to their ages and determines poverty rates and the areas' need for services and projects, and through it we know the numbers of residents, buildings and other matters, and this matter is important for everyone."

Regarding attending Kirkuk Provincial Council sessions, Majeed indicated that "the issue of our attendance at Kirkuk Provincial Council sessions is linked to a decision by the Federal Court, which is the final decision-maker, as there is a team representing participants in the Kirkuk administration who say that the formation of the local government and its contract were legal, and there is a team on the other hand who says that it is illegal, and the court's decision is what will decide this matter."

He stressed that "the members of the Democratic Bloc in the provincial council are committed to attending their work in the council and participating in receiving its clients, but they do not participate in the council sessions until the issue is resolved by the Federal Court."

The head of the third branch of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Kirkuk, Mohammed Kamal, had demanded last Monday to postpone the population census in the province until Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution is implemented.

Kamal said in a press conference that "preparations for the population census are necessary, but the situation in Kirkuk is different and the province is not ready to conduct it. There are displaced people from Kirkuk in the cities of the region, and in 1988 the Baathist regime demolished 4,500 Kurdish villages and deported their residents to the provinces of the Kurdistan region."

3 reasons behind the recent rise in the dollar.. Financial expert

link

Financial expert Ahmed Saddam attributed the recent rise in the exchange rate of the US dollar against the Iraqi dinar to three reasons today, Saturday.

Saddam told Al-Jarida, “This increase from 148,000 to 152,000 per hundred dollars is linked to the war on Lebanon and the resulting tensions in Iraq. This means that the recent increase is the result of negative expectations that are usually exploited by speculators to raise the dollar exchange rate.”

He continued, "In addition to the recent tightening by the Central Bank of Iraq, especially after imposing guardianship on three banks, this matter I believe constituted a relative restriction on some other banks that trade in dollars in the parallel market and thus generated expectations of a decrease in the level of cash dollars in the parallel market."

He continued, "We can also say that the local trade movement is relatively active with the start of the new school year, and this prompts many small traders to request dollars from the parallel market to settle their commercial transactions, and thus leads to an increase in the dollar exchange rate."

The source confirmed that "the base, which includes the largest part of the American forces present in Iraq, contains many departments, whether combat forces, air defense systems, engineering, or aviation.

He added, "Movement is almost limited in the base, which indicates the presence of strict instructions and guidelines on the necessity of caution and remaining within fortified locations in anticipation of any emergency."

It is noteworthy that Ain al-Assad base is one of the largest bases in Iraq and includes a large part of the deployed American forces, as their number reaches thousands of soldiers according to initial information.

In a later statement, the party also said that its fighters bombed the settlement of Metzova with a rocket barrage today, Saturday.

She explained that this is "in support of our steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, in support of their valiant and honorable resistance, in defense of Lebanon and its people, and in response to the barbaric Israeli invasion of cities, villages, and civilians."

Media reported that sirens sounded in Safed, northern Tiberias, Beria, Kerem Ben Zumra, Kadita, Amiad and Tsab'un after the rocket salvo.
