Trump announces a temporary ceasefire with Iran for two weeks
US President Donald Trump announced his approval of a temporary ceasefire with Iran for two weeks, in a move aimed at paving the way for a long-term peace agreement in the region.
Trump said his decision came after talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir, who asked him to postpone the planned military strike against Iran.
He explained that this conditional suspension of military operations is linked to Iran’s agreement to a “complete, immediate and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that the ceasefire would be “mutual” between the two parties.
Trump noted that U.S. forces had already achieved their military objectives, and that negotiations with Iran had reached an advanced stage regarding a final peace agreement, adding that Tehran had submitted a 10-point proposal believed to form a negotiable basis.
He indicated that most of the previous points of contention between the United States and Iran had been agreed upon, noting that the two-week period would be used to finalize and draft the final agreement.
Trump concluded his statement by emphasizing that this step represents a real opportunity to resolve one of the longest-running conflicts in the region and achieve peace in the Middle East.
I'm sure we'll get more details tomorrow
