Huge room for Chinese yuan to improve global use: PBOC official
QINGDAO, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese yuan has huge room to improve its use in global systems partly due to increasing demand for yuan-denominated assets, a central bank official said Sunday.
"Yuan's international status is far lower than the proportion of the Chinese economy in the global economy, which means enormous room for improvement in the currency's global use," Yin Yong, vice governor of the People's Bank of China, said at a forum held in Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province.
The currency only accounts for around 1.8 percent of international clearing, 2 percent of foreign exchange (forex) transactions, and over 1 percent of forex reserves, Yin said.
In contrast, China, the world's second largest economy, boasts more than 15 percent of global GDP and around 11 percent of trade.
Thanks to solid economic growth, Yin believes there is demand for more yuan-denominated assets in financial markets and the real economy worldwide.
Yin said the Belt and Road Initiative provides a significant opportunity for internationalization of the yuan. "In 55 countries along the Belt and Road, payment in yuan only makes up less than 5 percent of total trade volume."

Morocco begins gradually float its currency this week" Quote: "The authorities have entered the final preparatory phase for the introduction of greater exchange rate flexibility in 2017" These are the types of articles we're looking for to come out of Iraq prior to a float. There are several parallels to what Iraq is trying to accomplish, Egypt and Morrocco are the latest. When we start seeing articles that talk about support for a transition as well the conditions are right for a move to a float, we'll know we're getting close. Morocco is already in Article VIII compliance, that's the first hurdle Iraq needs to get over before we'll see articles like the above. IMO.

Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi received on Monday a telephone call from Turkish Prime Minister Ben Ali Yildirim.
Mr. Yildirm offered condolences to Dr. Haider al-Abadi and the Iraqi people on the terrorist bombing that targeted citizens in the area of Al-Tayyar Square in Baghdad, condemning terrorism and stressing the importance of cooperation to eliminate it.
They also discussed the issue of joint water management between the two countries, and the emphasis on providing Iraq with the water it needs.
They also stressed the importance of strengthening economic and trade cooperation between the two countries and the contribution of Turkish companies in Iraq reconstruction and investment efforts.
