A US military base in Iraq
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he planned to keep a military base in Iraq "to monitor Iran."
Trump said in an interview with CBS's "Face the Nation" program on Sunday that the US intelligence services made a mistake when it concluded that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction during the rule of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
Trump also said he did not believe the leaders of his country's intelligence agencies on what they said Iran was adhering to the nuclear deal that the United States had withdrawn from.
"I disagree with them," he said.
Trump said he planned to keep a military base and US forces in Iraq "to monitor" Iran, despite his tendency to reduce the US military presence in the region.
On China, Trump said his administration was "doing well" in concluding a trade deal with Beijing ahead of a March 1 deadline to raise tariffs.
With regard to the wall with Mexico, Trump said there was no possibility that there would be another government closure unless Congress announced an agreement on financing the wall by the deadline of mid-July.
As for North Korea, Trump said he thought there was a very good chance of reaching an agreement.
On Venezuela, the US president said the use of military force in Venezuela was one of the options.
"But he is definitely one of the options," he said, in response to a question about what could make him use force in Venezuela.
In the Syrian case, Trump defended the decision to withdraw US combat troops from Syria and Afghanistan, saying this was consistent with his campaign promises.
I do not want endless wars," he said, reiterating his complaint about the material and humanitarian costs of military operations.
He said US troops had been in Afghanistan for almost 19 years and added that while the results of negotiations with the Taliban were not clear: "They [the Taliban leaders] want peace, they are fed up ... everyone is bored."
Trump pointed out that the Da'ash organization had been almost out of Syria and promised that a declaration would soon be issued to eliminate that organization by 100%.
He also said he was also planning to keep a small contingent of troops in Afghanistan for "real intelligence gathering" and said US forces would return to that country if necessary.

BAGHDAD / The Iraqi National Congress Party on Monday called on Iraqi political forces to enact a law restricting US moves in Iraq to preserve national sovereignty.
"The Iraqi National Congress is following all the American positions and statements regarding the military and security presence in Iraq, which are echoed by US President Donald Trump's assertion on Sunday that US forces remain in Iraq under the pretext of monitoring Iranian activity in the region," the party said in a statement.
He added that "the recent US military positions and movements inside the Iraqi territories represent a clear violation of Iraqi sovereignty and a blatant challenge to the free political will aimed at neutralizing Iraq from any regional conflict and preventing the state from waging a proxy war against the will and interests of those who do not want Iraq and the region good."
He called on the Iraqi National Congress, "national forces in Iraq, to the need to unify the row and speech towards the recent US moves in Iraq, and restricting movement and law in accordance with the common interest controls away from the policies of ascendancy and hegemony and imposition of the fait accompli and to preserve and maintain the sovereignty of Iraq and the dignity of Iraqis. BAGHDAD / The leader of the Supreme Council Baqir al-Zubaidi called on Monday to reconsider the security plans for the presence of real movements to redraw the map in conjunction with the movement of Nasra Front in the Syrian province of Idlib.
Al-Zubaidi said in a statement that "there are implications for redrawing the map of the region while the Nasra Front is moving to impose a new reality in the province of Idlib, which is accompanied by a total disregard of the international coalition forces and parallel to what is happening in Afghanistan. Iraqi Minister of Oil Thamir al-Ghadban said that the Iraqi-Jordanian relations has witnessed obvious development especially after the formation of the new government.
This development started by the visit of Iraqi President Barham Salih to Amman on November 15, 2018, then the visit of Finance Minister Fuad Hussein on December 19, 2018, then the visit of King Abdullah II of Jordan to Baghdad on January 14, 2019, preceded by the official visit of the Jordanian Prime Minister to Baghdad Omar al-Razzaz on December 29, 2018, and his meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi, Ghadban said.
Following the meeting between Razzaz and Abdul Mahdi, a joint statement was issued, affirming the mutual keenness to develop political, security, and economic bilateral relations, the minister added.
Iraq recently signed a number of economic deals with Jordan in the fields of trade exchange and customs removal. Both sides agreed to establish a free trade zone near the mutual borders between, and to activate an agreement to extend a pipeline to transport oil from south of Iraq to the Jordanian port of Aqaba in the Red Sea.
Abd al-Mahdi said that Jordan will reduce the customs for Iraqi cargos passing Aqaba port, while Iraq will reduce the price of oil in return.
He added that the Jordanian industrial city will greatly serve both countries."

The two sides also agree to sign a trade agreement between Royal Jordanian and Iraqi Airways in the field of "Code Share" to enable passengers on Iraqi airlines to reach various international destinations, as well as training and cooperation in the fields of aviation, air transport and exchange of experiences in the field of meteorology Air and ports.
It is also decided to start work on the door to door mechanism for goods, goods and petroleum products between the two countries starting from 2/2/2019, so that the industrialists, traders and businessmen in both countries will be able to transport their goods and goods from Iraq to Jordan and vice versa.
