Iraq’s Oil Production Problem

Iraq, September 18, 2018

Iraq’s oil production will only grow marginally over the next 10 years despite its potential capacity, which stands at as much as 7 million bpd, an analyst from IHS Markit has forecast.

According to Christopher Elsner, OPEC’s second-largest producer will only be able to boost production to 5 million bpd over the next decade, and by 2036 it would only grow to 6 million bpd, Arab News reports.

The reason for the country’s inability to boost production considerably is the political and economic situation. Iraq is currently dealing with protests in the south prompted by problems ranging from a lack of access to clean drinking water and electricity to high jobless rates.

But there are also industry-specific problems, according to Elsner, and most of them have to do with money. Noting that the estimated production numbers were “conservative”, Elsner explained, “There is a lot of investment in getting wells out of the ground. And there’s a lot of investment in exporting that oil. But the connections between the oil fields and the storage farms in the south and the export points have been what has really led to the bottlenecks in Iraq.”

Pipeline shortages and lack of electricity in some fields were also among the challenges that Iraq needs to overcome if it wants to boost its production more considerably and more quickly.

Iraq had oil reserves of 153 billion barrels as of last year, but earlier this year Oil Minister Jabar al-Luaibi said the actual reserves could be twice as large. If the higher estimate proves true, it would make Iraq the largest oil-rich country in the world, ahead of Venezuela, which claims its reserves are just above 300 billion barrels, and also ahead of Saudi Arabia, with 260.8 billion barrels.

Even so, developing these reserves will still require a lot of capital and infrastructure expansion that Iraq is currently finding difficult to find and build, respectively.

Minister to Brief Parliament on Duty-Free Contracts

Iraq, September 18, 2018

In May of this year, we reported claims that Iraq’s anti-corruption bodies were investigating the contract to operate the duty-free shops at Baghdad and Basra airports, following reports of corruption from Al-Ahad TV.

According to a new report from Al-Ahad TV, and to documents recently received by Iraq Business News (see below), the Iraqi Parliament has recently written to the Minister of Transport asking him to appear in parliament to answer questions in relation to a varitety of matters, including apparent irregularities in the extention of the contracts with Iraq Duty Free, which is owned by Financial Links.

The report alleges that the provision of 5 busses, 200 passenger trollies and other items to the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) amounts to bribery and corruption, contrary to Iraqi Law.

The Parliamentary Anti-Corruption Bureau has also written to the Inspector General for the Ministry of Transport asking him to investigate the contract.

Iraq Duty Free denies any wrongdoing.

We’ll report more details as the story unfolds.

Germany's Defense Minister calls on the Peshmerga and Iraqi forces to "coordinate" in the disputed areas

Sep 18, 2018

Erbil, Anatolia: German Defense Minister Ursula von der Lien on Monday called for "joint coordination" between the Peshmerga forces and Iraqi forces in the disputed areas between Arbil and Baghdad.
This came in media statements made during a visit to the military forces of her country in Arbil, the capital of Kurdistan.
She called for a "joint military coordination between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi forces to confront the organization of the Islamic state, side by side, in the disputed areas," describing those areas as "important."
The disputed areas include Kirkuk province, parts of the provinces of Nineveh, Salahuddin (north) and Diyala (east), where the former Iraqi regime, led by the late President Saddam Hussein, made demographic changes for the Arabs at the expense of the Kurds and Turkmen.
As for the war on the "state," the German minister stressed that "the organization poses a real threat to the region and the world at large."
She explained: «In recent years, we have faced with the Peshmerga forces organization advocacy, not only support the consultation, but was a logistical support and software in this regard».
She pointed out that her country «currently has 150 German military advisers working in the region, but we are considering reducing this number to 100 advisers, and this decision comes after the decline of the force in Iraq is encouraging».
On Sunday evening, Deir Leyn arrived in Erbil to meet senior officials in the province.
In December, Iraq announced the restoration of all its state-controlled territory in 2014, estimated to be one-third of Iraq's territory, following three years of military campaign supported by the US-led international coalition.
The organization still retains dormant cells spread throughout most of the country and gradually began to revert to its old style of pre-2014 guerrilla attacks.
The International Alliance played a key role in the war against the organization, by providing air cover for Iraqi forces; as well as training and arming.

9-18-2018   Intel/Newshound Guru tman23   I always said...news about lower denoms always came out end of Sept and start of Oct was chatter of lifting 3 zeros, this was from official sources...AND they said the only appropriate time to lift the zeros is at the start of the New Year...OH YES...LIFT ZEROS MEANS REMOVE THE CURRENCY FROM THE MARKET PLACE... AND THE EXCHANGE RATE...

9-17-2018   Intel Guru Delta   ...they cannot introduce the lower denominations, unless the rate has to change. We do believe this is two events in one day. They might even show us a rate before they introduce all those lower denominations. And this is how the phase-out of the the 3 zeros will start. ...those lower denominations, they’re going to have more value. And of course those 3 zero notes are gonna have more value, because they’re going to reinstate their currency.  I mean just think about it, this is a big deal. If this isn't the moment that the Central Bank told us, then why all this hype? Why all this advertisement for it?  ...why would they print a lot of small group with no value? ...We’re really expecting them now, because now they’re overdue. The reinstatement of the Iraqi dinar is overdue...  ...it’s going to happen in this month, or even if they take it to October, it’s not a problem.   [post 2 of 2]

“The governor of the bank Ali al-Alaq said...: "The Central Bank to develop a plan to compensate the market small categories of local currency, as will be next month large quantities of huge ones," noting that "these quantities will meet the need of the local market for those categories of  currency."  ...here’s the most important question a lot of people are asking: Are the small notes the 250 to 500? We do believe no. I don’t believe that’s the case because, where’s the logic behind them printing AGAIN the 250, 500? ...We do believe this [is] the small groups, not the 250, and 500, and 5000. We do believe that they’re going to be the 50, the 100, the 200, that they did talk about.  Iraq is exactly telling us what they are going to do. That they have a plan to modernize the existing currency, the ones that they’ve got right now, and delete the zeros. So this is one event.  [post 1 of 2....stay tuned]

Surprised?  Like I keep saying the CBI is in charge of the reinstatement not some banks in the US.

Next month…  Article quote:  “The Governor of the Central Bank said: The banks plans are to modernize the currency in circulation and the deletion of the zeros.”  ...they will lift the 3 zeros from the exchange rate, because they’ve lifted as much of the 3 zeros from the streets that they could, physically.   [post 2 of 2]
