Statement*
•••••

The accelerating events that Iraq is witnessing in light of the current political differences represent a worrying indicator of the stability and social peace that the government has worked to perpetuate and consolidate since taking office in May 2020.

Over the past two years, the government has adopted a calm and patriotic pattern in dealing with various political crises, putting the public interest ahead of private interests, and focusing its professional efforts on preserving people's security and interests, and avoiding engaging in political polemics.

From this point of view, the government expresses its astonishment at the continued attempts to immerse it in the details of political crises even after entering the stage of conducting business, and its announcement, since the day after the elections, to take all measures to hand over duty and responsibility to the government that is formed according to constitutional contexts.

The government renews its appeal to all political forces not to overthrow political crises on them, but rather to adopt the approach of constructive dialogue; To address the differences and get the country out of a state of obstruction, it calls on everyone to understand the critical and sensitive situation in which Iraq stands today, and to prevent the country from being plunged into a security or social crisis amid complex regional and international circumstances.

Iraq has been able to recover after great suffering and sacrifices, and everyone must preserve what has been achieved, and support the government and its institutions, and the security and military forces; To carry out its duties in ensuring security stability.

We carried the slogan of silence and not to enter into political confrontations and refused to respond to the unjust accusations and smear campaigns, and we preserved the independence of the government in political and electoral competition by not participating in the elections that took place in October 2021; To protect the elections from any accusation or interpretation, however, the accusation and misinformation machine did not stop trying to distort this national role, and to challenge the government’s impartiality and credibility on every occasion, and without objective reasons.

The government calls on everyone to confront crises and disputes in the spirit of national dialogue under the roof of one nation, to be wise in interpreting events, and not to build on assumptions, theories and assumptions that have nothing to do with the truth.

The security of Iraq and the safety of its people is a trust that must be preserved.
It is God's success.

The source, who requested anonymity, added; "Sunni and Kurdish parties are also afraid of holding the presidential election session, especially since the parliament door has become permissible and the Sadrists can storm it and disrupt the presidential election session and assign the framework candidate to form the government."

Meanwhile; Shafak News Agency monitored; Movement and calls within the Sadrist movement, published on social media, threaten to storm the House of Representatives again if the coordinating framework insists on the nomination of Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani for the position of Prime Minister.

On Thursday, activists on social media in Iraq circulated pictures of former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, carrying a weapon and walking in the street, after supporters of the Sadrist movement stormed the Green Zone in the capital, Baghdad.

The head of the State of Law Coalition appeared carrying a machine gun, while he was surrounded by a number of gunmen who also surrounded his house.

Some sources said that al-Maliki took to the street after al-Sadr called on his supporters to withdraw, after they stormed the parliament building.

Al-Maliki's move to take up arms and to document the matter through pictures was seen as a message of "challenge" or a sign of readiness for confrontation, in light of the continued protests of the Sadrist movement.

Hundreds of al-Sadr's supporters entered the Iraqi parliament's headquarters and the rooms of the special committees, where they chanted slogans in support of al-Sadr and against the forces of the "coordinating framework" backed by Iran.

Al-Maliki had condemned the intrusion, describing it as a blatant violation of the right to demonstrate, while the political crisis in the country deepened. The tension between al-Maliki and al-Sadr has increased recently, following the publication of audio leaks of the head of the "State of Law Coalition" attacking al-Sadr, describing him as a murderer and other "slanderous" labels. A message to Al-Maliki The Prime Minister, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, called on the demonstrators to adhere to the peaceful demonstrations, and to immediately withdraw from the Green Zone. Al-Kazemi said in a statement: "We call on our protesting sons to abide by their peace, preserve public and private property, and the instructions of the security forces responsible for protecting them in accordance with the regulations and laws, and to immediately withdraw from the Green Zone." "The security forces will be committed to protecting state institutions and international missions, and preventing any disruption to security and order," he added.

Al-Sadr called on his supporters to withdraw, and said it was a message to the corrupt.

Al-Sadr said in a statement: "A revolution of reform and rejection of oppression and corruption. Your message has arrived, dear friends. You have terrified the corrupt. A pitcher of ears, pray two units of prayer and promises to your homes safely

Political analyst Hussein Al-Kinani considered, on Thursday, that the demonstrators entered the Green Zone smoothly, as it was planned and prepared by Al-Kazemi to provoke sedition and to remain in the presidency of the Council of Ministers for a longer period.

Al-Kinani said in a statement to / the information /, that "the demonstrators entered the Green Zone yesterday evening and to the sovereign institutions that should not be entered in this way, as it raised suspicions among most of the Iraqi people's classes."
And he added, "The entry of the demonstrators in this smooth manner was certainly planned and prepared by Al-Kazemi, and the aim of it was to stir up sedition and for him to remain in the presidency of the Council of Ministers for a longer period."

Al-Kinani indicated that “electronic armies and some media financed by Al-Kazemi and foreign intelligence rushed to broadcast a state of unjustified media escalation in order to stir up sedition and create a state of panic among the simple Iraqi citizen.”

From the important constitutional episode that delayed the formation of the government, which is the position of the President of the Republic from the Kurdish House.”

Gulf Banks Raise Interest Rates As Soon As The US Increase

link

The Gulf central banks raised interest rates, Wednesday evening, immediately after the US Federal Reserve (Central Bank) announced that it raised the interest rate by 75 basis points (0.75%), to confront inflation rates that reached their highest levels in more than 40 years.

The Saudi Central Bank said that it increased key interest rates by 75 basis points, in a move parallel to the increase approved by the US Central Bank, given the Saudi riyal's link to the dollar.
The Saudi Central Bank raised the rate of repurchase agreements (repo) and the rate of reverse repo agreements (reverse repo) 75 basis points to 3% and 2.5%, respectively.

In the UAE, the Central Bank announced raising the base interest rate by three quarters of a percentage point to 3.75%, as of Thursday, referring to maintaining the interest rate that applies to borrowing short-term liquidity from the central bank at 50 basis points above the base rate.

The Qatar Central Bank also decided to raise the deposit interest rate by 75 basis points to 3%. The bank said in a statement that it increased the repurchase rate (repo) by 75 basis points to 3.25% and the lending rate by 50 basis points to 3.75%.

In Kuwait, the Central Bank announced that it decided to raise the discount rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 2.50% from 2.25%, as of Thursday. Basel Al-Haroun, Governor of the Central Bank of Kuwait, announced, in a press statement, that it was also decided to make an adjustment of varying rates in the monetary market intervention rates that are currently applied to all periods of the interest rate structure.

He said that this includes repurchase operations (repo), Central Bank of Kuwait bonds and securitization, the system for accepting time deposits, direct intervention tools, in addition to public debt instruments. The Central Bank of Bahrain also raised the basic interest rate on deposits for a month by 75 basis points to 4%.

The increase in interest rates in the United States came by 0.75%, for the second time in a row, to reach between 2.25% and 2.5%, as part of the strict policy approach pursued by the bank to confront inflation rates that reached their highest levels in more than 40 years.

Political Gathering: Al-Kazemi Was Angry At Al-Sudani's Candidacy And Plans To Create Crises

link

A member of the network assembly, Sami Fadel, confirmed, on Thursday, that the caretaker prime minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, was angry at the announcement of the coordinating framework for the nomination of Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani as prime minister.

Fadel said in a statement to the "Information" agency, "What happened yesterday confirms the existence of a pre-prepared scenario for the political forces to be convinced that there is no alternative at the present time to keeping Al-Kazemi as prime minister."

He added, "It is unreasonable for the Green Zone and the Parliament building to be stormed in less than two hours, at a time when the security services are supposed to protect the state's public headquarters."

Yesterday, hundreds of demonstrators stormed the Green Zone and entered the parliament building, before they withdrew after a tweet from the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr.

290 days and the time is open.. Iraq enters Guinness for the longest period without a government

link

Iraq entered the longest period of stagnation after the recent elections, as the internal conflict, mainly within Shiite and Kurdish blocs, prevented the formation of a government, which hinders required reforms, while the country is striving to recover after decades of conflicts.

More than nine months after holding elections in October, lawmakers tasked with choosing a president and prime minister did not seem close to agreeing on anything, leaving Iraq a record 290 days without a president or government.

The longest previous period was in 2010 when 289 days passed without a government until Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki assumed a second term in office.

The outgoing government of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi continues to conduct business. If the parties do not agree on a new government, Al-Kazemi's government may continue as a transitional government until new elections are held.

And in an indication that this stalemate will not be broken soon anyway, thousands of supporters of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, stormed the Iraqi parliament building yesterday, chanting slogans against his Shiite political rivals, days after they hinted at an agreement on a possible prime minister.

This political paralysis has left Iraq without a general budget for 2022, halting spending on much needed infrastructure projects and stalling economic reforms.

Iraqis say this situation is exacerbating the lack of services and jobs, even as Baghdad achieves record oil revenues due to high crude prices, and although it has not experienced major conflicts since the defeat of ISIS five years ago.

“There is no government, there is no budget, the streets are full of potholes, electricity and water are scarce, health care and education are dilapidated,” said Muhammad Muhammad, a 68-year-old retired public sector employee who lives in the southern city of Nasiriyah.

The same circumstances that Muhammad described sparked mass protests in Baghdad and southern Iraq in 2019.

At that time, the demonstrators demanded the departure of the parties that had been in power since the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, accusing them of corruption that prevented Iraq's progress. Security forces and armed factions killed hundreds of demonstrators, and the protests gradually stopped in 2020. Al-

Kazemi assumed responsibility as a consensus candidate following the protests and promised to punish the killers of the demonstrators and hold early elections on October 10.

Most of those who protested in the past lost hope for change.

Bickering Parties

Forming a government in Iraq usually takes months and requires winning the support of all the major political parties.

Since Saddam's overthrow, the Shiite parties, which represent the majority of the population in Iraq, retain the position of prime minister, the Kurds are the head of the country, and the Sunnis are the head of parliament.

The growing divisions between these blocs prolonged the government formation process severely this time.

In the Shiite camp, Sadr, who won the most votes in the October elections, withdrew his 74 deputies from parliament last month after he failed to form a government that excludes his Shiite rivals, most of whom are backed by Iran and have heavily armed wings.

With this withdrawal, al-Sadr left dozens of these seats to his rivals, but he indicated that he, his faction and his popular base, which includes millions, would not stand silent if they tried to form a government that he did not agree with.

Several hundred al-Sadr supporters demolished a concrete barrier and entered the Green Zone, which includes government buildings, on Wednesday, before storming Parliament.

Al-Sadr effectively prevented this month from nominating his arch-rival Al-Maliki, accusing the former prime minister of corruption in a tweet on Twitter.

Al-Sadr's rivals put forward another candidate, Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani, for prime minister, but Al-Sadr may also oppose his candidacy because he is an ally of Al-Maliki.

"We will demonstrate until the politicians and corrupt groups backed by Iran leave," said Sheikh Safa al-Baghdadi, a religious teacher, shortly before the demonstrators stormed parliament.

On the other hand, differences between the main Kurdish parties that run the Kurdistan region in northern Iraq prevent the selection of a president, a position that allows its holder, once approved by Parliament, to appoint a prime minister.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has held the presidency since 2003.

His rival, the Kurdistan Democratic Party, which received the largest number of Kurdish votes by a large margin, sticks to its presidential candidate. And neither side appears willing to budge.

"We have not been able to agree yet," said Shirwan Al-Dobardani, a parliamentarian from the Kurdistan Democratic Party. "The president's post should not remain in the hands of one party forever.

The State of Law Coalition’s representative, Duha Al-Qaisar, confirmed, on Thursday, that there is support from the forces of the coordination framework to reduce the dollar exchange rate.

Al-Qaisar said in a statement to "Information" that "most of the forces affiliated with the coordination framework are striving, and through the next government, to return the dollar exchange rate to its previous rate."

She added that "the concerned committees in the House of Representatives presented many studies on the possibility of returning the dollar exchange rate, and this does not entail any other consequences."

She pointed out that "there is a real tendency among most of the political forces to reduce the value of the dollar after the rise in prices and the damage of millions of citizens, especially the poor segment."

She pointed out that "the procedure requires all political forces in the House of Representatives to take measures that contribute to restoring the dollar exchange rate to what it was previously."

The representative of the National Approach Alliance, Hassan al-Asadi, had confirmed in a previous statement, the possibility of reducing the dollar exchange rate in the new budget, stressing that there is a parliamentary movement to return the dollar exchange rate to what it was previously

Government reassurance regarding currency reserves and excluding it from being affected by the dollar globally

The Prime Minister's Advisor for Financial Affairs, Mazhar Muhammad Salih, reassured Iraq's foreign currency reserves {dollar}.

Saleh: "The official foreign currency reserves portfolio in our country is subject to the principle of diversification in order to avoid the so-called risks of foreign currency fluctuations, which means any decrease in the dollar in exchange for a rise in the rest of the components of the foreign reserve portfolio."

He added, "On the other hand, Iraq's foreign trade is summed up in a high percentage of trading in the dollar area, and therefore the risk of currency fluctuations on import prices is in a mostly neutral range."

Saleh indicated that "the damages of the dollar's decline globally against other foreign currencies are still partial to the national economy."

On June 7, Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi announced that the reserves of the Central Bank of Iraq had reached $76 billion and would reach $90 billion by the end of this year.

A difficult day.. It started by storming Al-Sadr and ended with Al-Maliki's machine gun

link

Iraq lived a difficult day on Wednesday, in which many observers saw an alarm bell that required raising the level of caution in the country that has been exhausted by war and political turmoil for years.

Thousands of followers of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, entered the heavily fortified Green Zone in the center of the capital, Baghdad, where they chanted slogans in support of al-Sadr and against the forces of the "coordinating framework" backed by Iran.

Al-Sadr called on his supporters to withdraw, saying in a tweet on "Twitter": "Your message has arrived, dear ones, for you have terrified the corrupt, pray two units of prayer and return to your homes safely."

While the crowds of demonstrators were roaming the corridors of the Iraqi parliament, the "coordinating framework" forces issued a statement accusing the Sadrist movement of fomenting chaos.

The statement stated, "After the coordinating framework forces completed the practical steps to start forming a national service government and agreed unanimously to nominate a national figure known for his efficiency and integrity, it monitored suspicious movements and calls that urge chaos, stir up strife and strike civil peace."
