Zimbabwe to Allow Dollar Trading to Ease Dire Currency Squeeze

January 28, 2019, 10:27 AM

Zimbabwe said it will soon allow companies and individuals to trade dollars electronically, as it looks to ease a crippling scarcity of foreign exchange that’s sent the economy into meltdown.
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has upgraded its systems to allow for such transactions and will run testing until Feb. 1, after which it plans to go live, the Harare-based institution said in a statement Monday.

The southern African nation’s cash crisis has caused shortages of everything from fuel to bread, much of which is imported. Zimbabwe scrapped its own currency a decade ago to end hyperinflation and adopted a basket of units instead, with the dollar being the most widely used. The central bank then printed quasi-greenbacks called bond notes and an electronic currency known as RTGS$ to fund rampant government spending. That’s resulted in a convoluted system of exchange rates, with consumers charged different prices depending on how they pay.
READ: No Currency, Just a Currency Crisis: Zimbabwe’s Woes Deepen

Until now, Zimbabweans have struggled to transfer real dollars electronically and usually uses the black market and cash dollars instead.
“This is a small but important step in a long process of normalizing the monetary system in the country, which has become significantly dependent on the parallel market for goods and services payments,” said Chiedza Madzima, a senior analyst at Fitch Solutions in Johannesburg.
Zimbabwe's bond notes have weakened this year

The Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries earlier this month said the government should allow banks to trade dollars in a bid to halt the economic collapse, which has seen the official inflation rate surge to 42 percent.

The fact that banks are now allowed interchange of FX is the first positive step, although we are not sure how it would operate,” said Sifelani Jabangwe, president of the business-lobby group.
The value of bond notes and RTGS$ have plunged, even though the government says they should be worth the same as real dollars. Bond notes now trade at 3.76 dollars on the black market, according to marketwatch.co.za, a website run by financial analysts.   Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has said he wants to introduce a new currency this year. d

1-28-2019   Newshound/Intel Guru Mnt Goat   Article:  "FIVE-POINT PROPOSAL AIMED AT REMOVING FOREIGN FORCES FROM IRAQ"  ...just remember that it is the Iranian influence who is constantly pushing Iraq to get the US out. ...I keep telling everyone that this influence must be gone or no RV. I have said this many times and so in this why the NSA pulled the plug on the RV a week ago?

1-28-2019   Intel Guru RayRen98   I was really thinking we would have a different conversation today.  It's coming.   When it pops, are you going to be ready?   Have your plan together?  Those going after the contract rate don't wait.  For the rest of us waiting, can be rewarding.  If anything pops out we'll keep you updated.  ...We are just waiting for the call any day.  Maybe tomorrow or today.

[...is this MR going to happen this week? Monetary Reform I DO NOT SEE ANY INDICATION THAT WE WILL BE MOVING FORWARD THIS WEEK... EVEN THOUGH MANY WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT THERE IS STILL TOO MUCH CONTROVERSY IN THE BANKING SYSTEM FOR ANYONE TO THINK IT IS ANYWHERE NEAR SAFE AT THIS POINT...UNTIL THIS IS TAKEN CARE OF I DO NOT THINK WE WILL SEE A DARN THING HAPPEN...

1-28-2019   Newshound/Intel Guru Mnt Goat    We also know of the reconstruction plan 2018-2022 and so when will they mount up and move ahead aggressively with this plan? We are now seeing some signs but this money for these types of projects is coming from oil revenues and not donor nations or investors (electric grid, water plants and sewage). But remember you need to rebuild the infrastructure first before you can rebuild the buildings. So this is a promising sign.  So now is a waiting game. We just sit and wait.   [post 2 of 2]

1-28-2019   Newshound/Intel Guru Mnt Goat    I am not hearing anything from the CBI on a matter of completion of the project to delete the zeros. With only three days remaining in January I doubt if we are going to see any RV this month.  I do not have another window of opportunity for you. Like you I am very disappointed we did not yet see the RV. ...I do know that the US NSA stopped it on Jan 19th probably due to SECURITY reasons with Iranian influence in the elections. The three remaining ministers still have not yet been voted on. They are now fighting to get the Iranian militias out of Iraq. Since ISIS is now gone and the US is helping to protect the borders keep them out, there is no use for these militias any longer to occupy Iraq.   [post 1 of 2....stay tuned]

Homemade chicken eggs to treat cancer!

LONDON (Reuters) - January 28 - British scientists have succeeded in producing genetically modified chickens to lay eggs containing proteins and other substances that could lead to cancer treatment in the near future.

Scientists at the Roslyn Institute at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, confirmed that the eggs produced by these chickens were successfully tested and similar to those produced by traditional methods.

They pointed out that 3 eggs produced by one chicken contained a sufficient dose equivalent to modern medical doses, the chicken can produce about 300 eggs annually.

"We have not been able to produce a ready-made drug from these chickens until now, but our studies have shown that these genetically modified chickens can produce special proteins that will greatly help in finding appropriate treatments," Professor Helen Sang of the Institute told The Sun. And other applications in biotechnology. "

Dr. Lisa Heron, director of bird research at the institute, said the new technique is important not only to discover treatments for humans but also to contribute to studies and research on animal health.
