TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran on Monday reopened a border crossing with Iraq after it was closed a few days ago at the request of Baghdad, which faces a wave of bloody demonstrations, the ISNA news agency reported.

The Khosravi crossing was reopened in the morning and "a group of visitors heading to participate in the revival of Arbain al-Hussein went to the holy shrines in Iraq," said Jaafar Himati, who heads a committee coordinating the 40th ceremony in the Iranian province of Kermanshah.

The border has been closed since Thursday due to "unrest in Iraq and at the request of the Iraqi authorities," according to Esna.

This year, on the 17th of October, the fortieth anniversary of Hussein will take place at the tomb of Hussein bin Ali in the Iraqi city of Karbala, 110 kilometers (70 miles) south of Baghdad.

For his part, the US Secretary of State expressed confidence in the Iraqi forces, stressing the US position in support of Iraq and the government's efforts to enhance security and stability.

Earlier this month, Baghdad and southern provinces in Iraq witnessed mass demonstrations demanding better services, fighting corruption and providing job opportunities that led to deaths and injuries of demonstrators and security forces, prompting the government to declare a curfew in a number of provinces.

Iraq protests: Death tolls soars as pro-Iran militias accused of shooting protesters

'The Iranians want to militarise the situation so it cease to be a mass movement,' says one commentator

Iraqi paramilitary groups close to Iran are suspected of joining attacks on protesters in Baghdad and other cities, leading to heavy loss of life among demonstrators. Some 107 people have been killed and over 6,000 wounded in the last six days, though hospital doctors say the government is understating the true number of fatalities.

“The pro-Iranian militia have each taken a sector of Baghdad and are responsible for its security,” a source, who does not want his name published, told The Independent.

He said that snipers belonging to these groups had fired live rounds at protesters, often aiming for the head or heart. Eyewitnesses say that Iraqi soldiers are also firing directly into crowds of the protesters, who are demanding the fall of the government, jobs and an end to corruption.

The gunmen shooting protesters come from pro-Iranian factions of the Hashd al-Shaabi or Popular Mobilization Units, an 85,000-strong strong body that came into being to stop the Isis advance on Baghdad after the fall of Mosul in 2014. It is a coalition of about 30 groups, many of them predating Isis, which is paid for by the Iraqi government and nominally under its control, but with widely varying political loyalties. They includes powerful units, such as Ketaeb Hezbollah, which say opening that their first loyalty is to the Iranian leadership.

The demonstrations in Baghdad and in much of Shia southern Iraq are largely spontaneous, but where there are local leaders they have sometimes been singled out for killing.

Haider Karim Al-Saidi, a leading organiser of the protests, was shot dead by a sniper near Al-Mudhafar Square late on Sunday night. Earlier, witnesses had reported that they had seen snipers taking up positions on roof tops overlooking the square.

The paramilitaries have assaulted injured protesters in hospital: a doctor working in the Medical City complex in central Baghdad said that members of a paramilitary group called Asaib Ahl al-Haq, known for its pro-Iranian sympathies, had broken into a hospital ward filled with wounded demonstrators and started hitting them. When he protested, he was told “to mind his own business” and was beaten with a baton.

An Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan said that 6,107 people had been injured in the unrest, including 1,200 members of the security forces. Public buildings and political party headquarters have also been destroyed.

A paramilitary group called Kataib Hezbollah, which has no connection with the Lebanese group with a similar name but is strongly supportive of Iran, is alleged to have ransacked at least ten television stations that had been giving full or sympathetic coverage to the demonstrations. In one case gunmen in balaclavas arrived in twelve white cars without license plates and wrecked studios, seizing computers, beating up staff and taking their wallets and mobile phones.

The government has expressed suspicion that a third party is playing a role in provoking greater violence, through using snipers who shoot to kill. Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan said at a press conference that “malicious hands” were targeting protesters and security forces alike. This may be true in part but is also a bid by the security forces to evade responsibility for firing directly into crowds, though there is every sign that they have been doing just that. Repressive measures have included a two-day curfew, a continuing ban on the internet, and pre-emptive arrests.

The demands of the protesters have become more radical since last Tuesday, as the casualty toll has mounted, with growing calls for the fall of the government of Adel Abdul Mahdi. He has shown himself to be ineffective, making a speech at the weekend in which he outlined a 17-point plan including unemployment benefit and subsidised housing but he made little impression.  In his year in office, Mr. Mahdo has failed to introduce any important reforms so his sudden zeal for change carries little credibility.

10-6-2019   Newshound Guru MilitiaMan   ...The so called brotherly neighbor has tentacles deep inside helping them selves to the cash cow called Currency Auctions. I don't disagree, there are things in the country that are and will be far from over. However, one hell of a good way to solve that is to stop the auctions, raise the value, which will provide jobs that will come from going international with a new internationally excepted currency. That will be the facilitator for global trade for the world which will in turn beget purchase power for the citizens, while they grow economically with the new jobs created from the positive effects of raising the value. imo.

10-6-2019   Newshound Guru Bloodloch   There are somewhere between six and a dozen or more different factors that may influence exchange rates, depending upon who you are talking to. The money supply or currency issued is just one of them. Investor speculation, interest rate differentials, inflation rate differentials, gross domestic product, international investments, trade deals, and other factors all may come into play. At times it may seem like such determinations are more art than raw number-crunching science, or perhaps it's just whatever the central banks want it to be in order to achieve some global political agenda.  Investopedia says, "... exchange rates are determined by numerous complex factors that often leave even the most experienced economists flummoxed... "  I couldn't agree with them more.

10-6-2019   Newshound/Intel Guru David M. Witty    In ministerial cabinet meeting, Iraqi PM Abdel-Mahdi makes promises to meet demands of protesters: corrupt officials to be held accountable, land & housing for those with low income, interest free loans, opening Army to volunteers.

10-6-2019   Newshound Guru Jeff
They still have two major things to do before the rate can change.  This is based on current facts.  What I'm telling you can change through time but as where we're at right now with current facts -
the two things remaining are they have to finish the formation of the government and approve the budget...then they can change the rate.  That's exactly where we're at.  The facts are unfolding right before your eyes...

10-6-2019   Newshound Guru  Kaperoni
They've been using wheelbarrows for years what's the difference if they have to use them a few more? They're either going to do one of two things they're either going to Lop first to get to 1 to $1 exchange rate reducing the money supply from trillions to billions. And then float the currency allowing it to rise. Or they're going to just float it from the beginning and allowed to gradually increase over time allowing them to reduce the money supply we don't know that answer yet but it's not going to RV

10-6-2019 Newshound Guru MilitiaMan Lets hope the fire the citizens brought out over the past 5 days has the affect we await and they need! I have a feeling that the support they are getting from around the world, is squarely on the politicians backs now. They've been AWOKE imo... timing now is crucial for them to complete the reforms and get the market economy underway and international, ASAP. As that will usher in the employment and put purchase power in their hands. ...lifting the value of the Sovereign Currency will actually fix things! imo...

Abdul-Mahdi reforms do you end the anger?
Monday, October 7, 2019

Abdul-Mahdi reforms do you end the anger?
Government facilities have taken into account the demands of participating age groups (18-30 years) (AFP)
A week-long demand movement in Iraq is entering a phase of "cautious calm" to make room for contacts to "control the street." Adel Abdul-Mahdi launched the "first package" of reforms to «vent» congestion and accommodate popular demands, armed with a decision to control media coverage, and proceed with the capture of «security of the capital» and the provinces

The announcement by Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi and the speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohamed al-Halbousi, of “quick” reform steps may have the effect of “venting” the angry and continuous movement in his demand for the seventh day in a row. The death toll was more than 100 (demonstrators and military), with more than 4,000 wounded from both sides. Until late in the evening, the capital and the southern provinces witnessed a kind of "cautious calm," broken by limited demonstrations on Palestine Street in Baghdad and the "Revolution of the Twenty" square in Najaf. A calm is expected to "stabilize" in the next 48 hours, amid the likelihood of the return of Internet services blocked since last week, and to allow contacts by private channels to find solutions that control the street. In parallel, there are those who say that "the demonstrations may return again on Thursday and Friday," and that the demonstrators are in the process of preparing a "significant" action, in a message that they are keen to deliver to the federal government to pressure them, and test their seriousness in the implementation of «reform promises».

Official caution was accompanied by a change in media coverage of a number of Iraqi and Arab channels, and Baghdad's absence of any correspondent for any international news agency. Some channels have turned their “open” coverage into news and regular news, despite adopting the rhetoric of the “Intifada” and toppling the existing regime and the political process at first, armed with the positions of the demonstrators, ranging from the right demand due to a difficult living reality, and the call to overthrow the regime and the government. The latter was quick to launch a package of quick reforms in various categories, in terms of securing job grades, granting soft loans for launching private projects, securing land and houses for low-income people, as well as calling for an immediate ceasefire, treating the wounded and counting the fallen “martyrs” sponsored by the state. According to the Interior Ministry spokesman, Saad Maan, as of December 1, 46 thousand members will be appointed in the ministry after the provision of funds, stressing the existence of «malicious hands behind the targeting of demonstrators ... opened an investigation to find out who is behind» Targeting.

Internet services are likely to return in the next 48 hours

The government's “rescue” vision, as sources describe it, is based, along with Abdul-Mahdi's ministerial program, on the demands of protesters heard during their meeting with al-Halbousi, or during bilateral meetings with “specific channels” from day one. These demands, according to many sources, are closer to "individual, contradictory ... do not have a political dimension", which made it easier for the government to determine the orientations of the "reform packages", which took into consideration the participating age groups (18-30 years). If most of the demands for improving the living-service situation were prominent, the identification of activist groups on the line of movement, political demands that they submitted to the government and parliament, calling on them to implement them. But the answer was a categorical rejection, and they quickly declared that last Saturday's meeting had not reached a conclusion.

«News» continued with this group, which raised the ceiling of its demands, calling for «disrupt the work of the Constitution, and write a new constitution, and the formation of a National Transitional Council, and the transformation of the system into a presidential». This group of demonstrators seeks to "demolish the current political process" in its expression, and "build a new order." This proposal is contrary to the directives of the "Supreme Religious Reference" (Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani), despite the wide adoption of it by various forces. As for these, they described them as "vague directives that need to be shown more to work according to their contexts," as they see them as an essential part of the "oppressed group under the corruption and authority of the existing sectarian quota system," and refuse to be held to account for the US-backed group, specifically "civil society organizations." »Despite the similarity of the speech, they also refuse to be classified in the third category, which is described as« engineered », which works to hit« peaceful »demonstrations.

According to information from security services about interrogations of detainees and those accused of sabotage, many of them receive daily salaries from people directly connected to the US Embassy, at $ 20 a day, who were asked to “use violence and assault the security services”. ».

Two years after the defeat of ISIS, the security situation is better than it has been for years, but corruption is rampant, damaged infrastructure has not been repaired, and jobs are still scarce.
