Iran: Iraq protests reduced our exports by one billion dollars
Editing Date: 12/26/2019 12:26 • 77 times read
(International: Al Furat News) Iran announced that the popular protests in Iraq have caused a significant decrease in the value of its exports to the country.
The Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce between Iran and Iraq, Hamid Hosseini, said in a press statement that "the recent protests in Iraq managed to reduce the volume of Iran's exports to Iraq by one billion dollars compared to last year."
It is noteworthy that Iran occupies the second place after Ankara, in terms of trade exchanges with Iraq, as it reaches today about 12 billion dollars annually, less than ten percent of it is the value of Baghdad's exports to Tehran, according to official figures.
Activists launched the "Made in Iraq" campaign in support of the local product, and the campaign has already harvested its fruits, though relatively limited, as the production of some of the local factories (governmental and private) such as dairy and eggs factories and some food and consumer items has increased.

$3.4m to support Women and Children in Iraq
Iraq, December 26, 2019
UNFPA renews its partnership with the European Regional Development and Protection Programme for Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq (RDPP II) with a multi-year grant of a total of DKK 22,056,446, equivalent of US$ 3.36 million to the Fund’s on-going interventions to mitigate and respond to gender-based violence in Iraq.
The conflict in Iraq and the subsequent humanitarian crisis have exponentially exposed the population, particularly women, girls and boys, to various forms of gender-based violence, including in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
RDPP’s contribution supports training, capacity building and system strengthening initiatives targeting institutions and government entities. This partnership ensures the continuity of mentored service provision related to survivors and well-being of women and girls from refugee, internally displaced and host communities across the country.
Furthermore, this new funding enables UNFPA to work with partners on strengthening the legal framework and enhancing behavioral changes through evidence-based advocacy.
“This partnership aims to support government institutions in strengthening their capacity to respond to the survivors of sexual and gender-based violence and enhance the prevention of violence against women”, said Vincenzo Schiano-Lomoriello, RDPP Liaison and Project Manager, “This approach also ensures the active engagement of local partners and community leaders in the response to women and girl GBV survivors through the development of tools, national systems, and other capacity-building initiatives”.
“I am grateful for RDPP’s renewed trust in our interventions in Iraq,” said Dr Oluremi Sogunro, UNFPA Representative to Iraq. “UNFPA and RDPP’s partnership dates from 2017 and has allowed the Fund to support the establishment of a helpline
“119” for GBV survivors and put together a communication for behavioural impact (COMBI) plan to end Female Genital Mutilation’s in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq”.
“With RDPP, we aim at strengthening education, individual training, and national data systems as well as improving individual rights and freedoms across Iraq: We shall leave no one behind”, he concluded.

Report Documents Security Violations Against Protesters
Daring to kill and an absent justice: Report documents Iraqi security violations against protesters
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor urged the Iraqi authorities to open a comprehensive investigation into all the killings, kidnappings and torture Iraq has witnessed since the protests broke out last October 1 and to ensure it is independent, and to release all detained protesters charged with participating in protests unless they are charged or convicted in line with Iraqi law.
The Geneva-based group said in a report issued on December 19, 2019 that the protests in Iraq were peaceful and seemed at their outbreak to be spontaneous without any interference or invitation from any political or religious party, and the slogans and chants of protesters in the streets continued to express their demands at popular gatherings, despite the excessive force and resorting to repressive security measures by the armed militias of the Iraqi government.
The report, titled “The Iraqi movement: Daring to Kill and An Absent Justice,” highlighted the most important violations that Iraqi protesters are still subjected to, according to testimonies collected and documented by victims of these attacks, in addition to the reasons that led Iraqis to take to the streets to protest against the tragic conditions experienced by the country like the widespread corruption, the lack of services, and the widespread poverty.
Tariq Iliwa, a researcher at Euro-Med Monitor, said: “Although the Iraqi government does not recognize the legality of the popular movement in Baghdad and the rest of the provinces, from a legal point of view, the Iraqi Constitution of 2005 emphasized the importance of respecting the right to peaceful protest and freedom of opinion and expression, as International law also affirmed these rights in many international covenants and treaties.”
Iliwa added that government forces and armed militias have carried out forcible kidnappings and disappearances to intimidate protesters, with the aim of reducing the intensity of the protests until they stop.
According to the 15-page report, Iraqi government forces and armed militias have adopted, since the outbreak of the protests, a number of repressive and brutal methods against protesters, killing hundreds, assassinating dozens of activists, arresting and kidnapping thousands of protesters, and closing a number of institutions and press offices.
The report documented testimonies of detainees, some of whom were released, while others died as a result of torture by security forces or armed militias, including activist Hassan al-Husayni al-Husayni, who was kidnapped on November 25 by security forces wearing civilian clothes while he was at one of the protests. He was found alive in Ibrahimiya area eight hours after his abduction, with signs of torture on his body.
According to testimonies collected by Euro-Med Monitor, hundreds of detainees were tortured in various ways, such as beatings, use of electric sticks, hanging and other cruel and degrading means.
The report provided statistics on the protests that took place in Iraqi cities, according to the documentation of Euro-Med Monitor’s team and the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Iraq from October 1 to December 15.
Euro-Med Monitor called on the Iraqi authorities, in line with their international commitments, to respect human rights by taking all executive, legislative and judicial procedures to make sure Iraqis can enjoy their right to peaceful protest and freedom of opinion and expression.
Euro-Med Monitor stressed that security forces should commit to the basic principles of the United Nations on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials.
Euro-Med Monitor recommended that it is necessary to work to prosecute all leaders and those responsible for violations committed against protesters, calling on authorities to respect the right of protesters to peaceful assembly as long since it is a constitutional right affirmed by the Iraqi Constitution, and to refrain from using force against them. Those who are involved in such violations often prompt criminal sanctions against them internally or internationally.
Euro-Med Monitor called on Iraqi authorities to respond to the demands of the protesters by adopting a set of legal, economic and social reforms. The group concluded by urging the legislative authority to enact a law regulating the right to protest and peaceful assembly in a manner that guarantees lifting all restrictions on rights guaranteed by International Humanitarian Law.

Deputy for construction: Early elections do not work without amending Article 76 of the Constitution

{Baghdad: Al Furat News} The deputy of the building bloc, Ahmed Al-Kinani, stressed that early elections do not work without amending Article 76 of the constitution regarding naming and defining the largest bloc.
Al-Kanani said to the program (special coverage) broadcast on the Al-Furat satellite channel tonight, that "the electoral system since 2003 was a closed list and today the Kurdish component has reservations and they are respected, therefore there is a fear of being properly represented in the mixed areas.
"But the demand of the street and the demonstrations demanded an acceptable electoral law, and the authority confirmed that speeding up the legislation of the law will allow the people to be present in the parliament dome in the event that their ranks are in the electoral districts. It is possible that the power of organized political blocs will return more in the Iraqi street."
He continued, "The lack of interest of the political blocs in the interests of the street led to the public grumbling," stressing that "the law will change a lot in the elections and will be high participation."
And he affirmed, "The discussions of the Shiite blocs continue to choose the prime minister, and to get out of this crisis, a brotherhood session must be held for all the Shiite blocs to get out of the crisis."
He pointed out that "political struggles have started to reflect on the provinces, and construction has addressed the mandate of the next prime minister after others have abandoned him, therefore today there is responsibility, security, and disruption of idle circles and schools. Therefore, a government must be formed."
He pointed out that "the caretaker government did not deal responsibly with the demonstrations, and the president of the republic does not refuse the candidate, but has to present the name of the candidate and the blocs are the ones who vote by saying or rejecting", adding that "even if we went to early elections if Article 76 was not modified about determining The bigger block we will remain in the same problems. "
Al-Kanani concluded by saying, "The constitution includes clauses that do not fit with the situation of Iraq as components and parties, and we hope that the amendment will be by going to elect the prime minister from the people to get rid of these forms."

{Baghdad: Al Furat News} MP Hoshyar Abdullah accused the big parties of deluding the people that the new election law is in the interest of independents, while it will give the opportunity to the same parties to win the upcoming elections.
Abdullah said in a statement today, "The big parties deceived the people that the new election law is in the interest of the independents, but the truth is the opposite. The loyalists of the parties who possess money and arms most of them will win the elections, by imposing their influence and control over the districts that they control," according to For what the booby-trapped law stipulates is that the one who has the most votes is the winner and not the one who gets more than fifty percent.
He added, "Also, this law is unjust to the many districts that are not recognized by the federal government because it will not have deputies in Parliament, in addition to the problem of integrating districts that have a population of less than one hundred thousand with cities."
And, "The days will prove how the anger of the street was exploited to pass a law that serves the political class and ensures its continued control of the reins of government, and there are too many mines and mazes within this law that will be revealed in the near future."

Well it doesn’t do us any good if we’re not in there – it’s good to know that they are there and are populated – We also know that the Iraqi dinar is going to be increasing in value – continuing to increase – and it should be settled in at whatever time we tier 4B are finally released to come in for our exchanges...what I’ve heard from bank sources today is that we should be in the driver’s seat by Thursday the 26th...But if we don’t...start our exchanging by Friday then we are looking to Monday-Tuesday start...I hate the term “Back walls” ...but this is from a very, very strong authority...

The demonstrators have a huge impact and will force this out. No, Iraq does not need a robust economy or a market economy to allow the reinstatement of the dinar. Like I keep telling everyone, there is a difference between VALUE and the RATE of a currency. We know for a FACT that the Iraq dinar has the value it needs already way beyond its current rate. The rate is being held back intentionally due to corruption.

The other side of that topic is "float or fixed", and I'm leaning heavily towards "float". This will keep pressure on all parties to keep moving Iraq forward, which may turn a .10 exchange rate into much more in a short time. The catch to that is going to be the cash in timeframe. I'm convinced it will be at least 90 days, but probably no more than a year. The new and old currencies would be used at the same time, and there's a good chance it will make sense to reinvest in the new currency as well. That is ONLY true if it's a float...

Khallati: There is no turning around in the political blocs on the new election law
12/25/2019 21:43\
[Baghdad-where]
The representative of the Parliamentary Bloc of Parliament, Hassan Khalati, affirmed that there was no detour from the political blocs on the new election law, while clarifying the role of Iraqi tribes in the law.
Khalati said in a press statement that "the main objective of the election law legislation in this particular circumstance came within the section of political reforms and mass demands backed by reference assurances, provided that an equitable election law responds to these demands."
He added, "What happened in the law are two new changes, namely the one constituency and the multiple constituencies in addition to the individual candidacy, which we believe is among the demands related to the elections is the repeated complaint that the political lists are gnawing at the seats of the independents. Therefore, the response came that the nature of the nomination in the elections is in individual lists that give Equal and independent opportunities for the next elections. "
"Previously, there was a slight participation rate, especially in the recent elections, and today according to the new law, as long as there are equal opportunities for the political person, independent, and the square will be exposed to both sides, we believe that participation will be better."
He explained that "the proposal submitted by Al-Hikma is that the electoral district be based on a single parliamentary seat, even though the controversy has not been resolved, as it will be an annex to be voted upon by Parliament later and guaranteed with the law."
Khallati pointed out that "indicators have now been put forward after the vote on the law. Some say that it is a detour from the blocs to the demands of the masses and we confirm that there is no justification for this as long as the draft law says that it is 50% for individual and 50% for lists of blocs and we demanded that they be 100% for individual lists."
"As long as the top wins the top, if there is a complete response, but another problem has been raised that when the electoral district is at the level of classes, that gives preference to the clan side, and the lists will be on the basis of clans, and we confirm that the nature of the clans constitutes the demographic composition, and not all clans are concentrated, but rather all On the contrary, when we make multiple districts, it gives way to elected clans in the governorates.
He added, "There are also other problems that have arisen regarding the commission's inability to hold early elections. We believe that the presence of the institution with its entire staff other than its superiors and accumulated experience will contribute to the success of the matter."
On resolving the prime minister candidate, Khallati indicated to "a synchronization between the election law and the selection of the prime minister", stressing, "It is the task of the President of the Republic according to Article 76; but the largest parliamentary bloc is no longer the determining factor, but there are new entries entered into the equation line for naming the new prime minister." It is the issue of popular acceptability, public demands and the new political situation that must be taken into consideration in nominating the candidate.
"Maybe the next few days will close the prime minister's order," Khallati concluded.
