Under pressure .. Iraqi President waving his resignation

Monday 12/23/2019
Iraqi media reported yesterday evening, Sunday, that Iraqi President Barham Salih waved the political forces to resign from his position before appointing a candidate for the new government that does not win the acceptance of the people.

According to the sources, the Iraqi president is currently under great pressure from the "Construction Alliance to pass the candidate Qusay al-Suhail to the post of prime minister of the next government, and that the Iraqi president urged the blocks to listen to the demands of the demonstrators."

On the other hand, Hassan Al-Kaabi, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, said in a press statement that "any candidate that does not represent the will of the people will not be accepted even if he is submitted by all the blocs in the House of Representatives, and that public satisfaction is the basis for naming the next Prime Minister."

Iraqis reject PM nominee - Thousands pour into streets

23/12/2019  32 mins ago
Anti-government protesters gather at Tahrir Square in Baghdad, Iraq, Sunday, Dec. 22, 2019. Thousands of protesters poured into the streets of Baghdad and Iraqi southern provinces on Sunday, rejecting the nomination of what some call an Iran-backed candidate for the prime minister's post. The demonstrations came as a midnight deadline loomed without a solution being reached to name an interim premier. (AP Photo / Khalid Mohammed)
Thousands of protesters poured into the streets of Baghdad and Iraqi southern provinces Sunday, rejecting a nominee for the post of prime minister who some say is too close to Iran.
The demonstrations comes ahead a Sunday midnight deadline for naming an interim prime minister, with no apparent solution in sight. The protesters closed roads in southern provinces, including oil-rich Basra, saying they won't accept the nomination of the outgoing higher education minister, Qusay al-Suhail.
Iraqi leaderless uprising has roiled the country since Oct 1, with at least 400 people killed in the violence. Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in Baghdad and the predominantly Shiite south to decry corruption, poor services and a lack of jobs, while also calling for an end to the political system imposed after the 2003 US-led invasion.
Pressure from the demonstrations led Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi to resign late last month, after Iraqi most powerful religious authority, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, withdrew support for Abdul-Mahdi's government.
On Friday, al-Sistani, in his weekly sermon delivered by a representative, called for political blocs to form the government quickly. The Iranborn al-Sistani said that the new prime minister should be accepted by the public.

Al-Akhbariya correspondent said, "Protesters in Rumaitha district, north of Muthanna, cut the railway linking Basra and Baghdad until the popular demands are met."
He added that "the demonstrators demanded political parties not to underestimate the demands of the people and to respond to their requests and reconsider the nomination of Qusay al-Suhail to head the government."

The protesters set fire to a number of partisan and security headquarters in Dhi Qar Governorate, in southeastern Iraq, hours after the assassination of a militant and the injury of two armed attacks in the city, Sky News reported.
Among the headquarters that were exposed to the fire were two offices belonging to the Badr Organization and the Dawa Party and Asaib Ahl al-Haq, and the headquarters of the Special Mission Regiment in the city of Nasiriyah.
The protesters also set fire to the house of the head of the Security Committee in the Dhi Qar Jabbar Al-Mousawi Provincial Council.
The demonstrators cut the main bridge and the road linking Maysan and Dhi Qar governorates with burning tires.
The demonstrators also lit tires in the Al-Baradiyah area, in the center of Basra, to protest against poor services.
These developments come after the assassination of unknown armed men, Iraqi activist Ali Muhammad Al-Asmi, in the center of Nasiriyah, hours after two activists survived an assassination attempt in the same governorate.

Nomination of a New Iraqi PM Postponed till Wednesday

BasNews 23/12/2019 - 23:24 Published in Iraq
The nomination of an interim prime minister for Iraq has been postponed as the country's president has so far failed to name a new premier within the constitutional timeline.
A parliamentary source said in a statement that an interim PM will be nominated on Wednesday, according to Iraqi media reports. The decision came after the deadline for the process expired on Wednesday.
Iraq has been rocked by mass demonstrations since early October, with protesters making clear that they would not accept any figures as a nominee for the country's premiership if he or she held any political posts since 2003.

Al-Musawi: The most consensus group is to get around democracy

December 23, 2019 35 visits
Baghdad / SNG - Judge Jaafar al-Moussawi, a spokesman for the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, considered that the largest consensual bloc is "a detour of democracy and treachery against the will of the people ."
"The most consensual bloc is in itself a detour of democracy, and treachery to the will of the people," Mousawi said in a statement received by SNG.
He added that this is "a victory for the wishes of the political forces to achieve their interests, and by this we have wronged the text of Article 76 of the constitution, which explicitly stipulated for the parliamentary bloc and did not mention the allied blocs."
The Federal Court resolved the controversy over the concept of the largest bloc, today, by admitting that “the expression (the largest number of parliamentary bloc”) mentioned in Article (76) of the constitution means either the bloc formed after the elections through one electoral list, or the bloc formed after the elections from two lists One or more electoral lists, entered the House of Representatives, and became its seats after entering the Council. Its members took the oath in the first session, which was more numerous than the rest of the blocs, according to the court statement.

23/12/2019 Baghdad: Agencies
The terrorist organization ISIS is still practicing its crimes against the Iraqi people despite the announcement of the elimination of the organization in the country at the end of 2017, while the protesters returned to the street after the constitutional deadline, yesterday, to appoint a prime minister for the government that has been experiencing a constitutional vacuum for weeks. This comes at a time of increasing fears of the liquidation of other activists against the background of those who have been killed in the past weeks, and accused Iraqi parties of assassinating them with Iranian assistance.
Meanwhile, Iraqi media reported the release of the Iraqi doctor and activist Omar Youssef Al-Sultani, after he reported his disappearance, on Saturday, in Baghdad, without knowing more details.
The demonstrators return
After about two weeks of calm, the demonstrators raised the voice in Iraq in the face of procrastination by politicians who are unable to agree on a new prime minister with the end of the constitutional deadline today, and in the face of Iran's insistence that refuses to give up its option. And thousands of demonstrators, yesterday, to cut roads and close government departments in most cities in southern Iraq, the date set by the authorities to announce a candidate for prime minister. While political officials assert that Iran, which has strong influence in Iraq, continues its efforts to pass its candidate Qusay al-Suhail, who was a minister in the resigned government, the street declared his total rejection of Al-Suhail, considering that he is part of a political class that has monopolized the government for 16 years in the country. On Saturday night, demonstrators in Diwaniya and Basra in the south of the country declared a "general strike", after three months of unprecedented protests that killed about 460 people and injured 25,000 others.
We work for your service
The current parliament is the most divided in modern Iraqi history. On Wednesday, lawmakers failed to agree to redraft the election law, the biggest reform authorities introduced to the protesters, and adjourned the session until Monday. In the absence of an agreement between the parliamentary blocs on the personality to be entrusted with the task of forming the government, Saleh extended the constitutional deadline until yesterday, knowing that the constitution guarantees him the nomination of a candidate within 15 days after the end of the official constitutional deadline.
Also in Diwaniya, groups of protesters closed the official departments one by one, holding up signs saying, "We apologize for the inconvenience, we are working for you."
In Karbala and Najaf, the two holy cities of the Shiites, striking students and students closed all schools, and gathered in the thousands in the squares, and in Nasiriyah, the demonstrators cut many bridges and pivot roads, while all official departments remained closed. In the capital, Baghdad, students gathered in the central Tahrir Square in the center of the capital.
Iranian-Lebanese role
Since the approval of the House of Representatives on the first of December of the current resignation of the government of Adel Abdul Mahdi, the Stock Exchange has started trading several names, some of which were serious, and others were burnt papers to exclude them. It seems that the Iranians are pushing to name the Minister of Higher Education Qusay al-Suhail, according to what several sources have confirmed. Al-Suhail is a former member of the Shiite leader Moqtada Al-Sadr's movement, and later joined the State of Law bloc, which is led by former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
And several political sources close to the decision-making circles in the Iraqi capital confirmed that the commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Qassem Soleimani, and the official of the Iraq file in the Lebanese Hezbollah, Sheikh Mohammad Kawtharani, were pushing to persuade the Shiite and Sunni political forces to nominate Suhail. Suhail's chances were great in the last hours. But, since the consultations in Iraq resemble a secrets fund that comes as a surprise in overtime, it is difficult to predict the name of the prime minister.
Assassinations in Nineveh
An Iraqi security source in the Nineveh Police Command reported the assassination of an imam and preacher of Al-Huda Mosque in a suburb of southern Mosul. Colonel Haseeb Jassim said, “Gunmen in an unnumbered wheel opened fire with light and deadly weapons against Sheikh Ali Abdullah Amin Imam and the preacher of Al-Huda Mosque in Al-Shoura district, and they killed him immediately and fled to an unknown destination.” Jassim added that "the police forces handed over the body of the imam to the forensic medicine in Mosul and opened an investigation into the incident." A security source in Nineveh governorate announced last night that two civilians were killed and another wounded in an attack by ISIS militants on the Ruseef village in the Shoura district, south of Mosul. Many areas of Nineveh Governorate, especially near the Syrian border northwest of Mosul, continue to witness violence, kidnapping, killing and bombings by ISIS operatives against the Iraqi security forces and civilians.
Assassinations of activists since October, 29 assassinations since the start of the demonstrations, 3 unsuccessful attempts,Thirteen cases occurred in Baghdad alone, and none of the perpetrators was arrested, Assassinations liquidate and expand the demonstrators by killing children,Kidnappings of activists continue to spread

The protests are regaining their momentum in Iraq and the Prime Minister is captive to political accommodation
December 23, 2019

The protests regained their momentum in Iraq on Monday, with demonstrations, blocking roads and bridges with burning tires in the south, denouncing the ruling class, which has so far failed to agree to name a new prime minister and Iranian influence, according to AFP correspondents.

Civil disobedience began in the cities of Diwaniyah, Nasiriyah, Hilla, Kut and Amara, in the south of the country, where schools and government departments closed their doors on Monday.

"We escalated some protest steps (...) in response to the nomination of a new prime minister for the interim phase by the ruling parties since 2003, which are accused of corruption and stealing the wealth of Iraq," said Ali al-Diwani, a Diwaniyah protester.

Iraqis protesting since October 1 have been calling for a change in the political system that the Americans established after Saddam Hussein was toppled in 2003, and Tehran controls its joints today. They denounce the absence of any economic revival 16 years ago, after half of the oil revenues during those years evaporated in the pockets of politicians and businessmen accused of corruption, they said.

While the pro-Iranian parties and their allies are pushing to nominate Minister of Higher Education in the resigned government, Qusay al-Suhail, as prime minister, the street rejects any figure who held a political position since 2003.

"The demands of the Iraqi demonstrators are simple and do not need all of this procrastination and procrastination: choosing a prime minister with professional characteristics and who is independent and does not belong to any party that participated in the political process since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime," said engineer Mohammed Rahman, who is protesting in Diwaniya.

In order to renew the political class, the protesters are demanding a new election law. The government and parliament have begun work to reform the complex and twisted system that mixes proportions with the majority, and is in the interest of the major parties.

The demonstrators are calling for elections on the basis of individual voting "that guarantees the rise of an elite of the new political generation who can at least fix what the ruling parties spoiled," according to Rahman.

Parliament is expected to meet Monday afternoon to discuss the election law, and possibly the fate of the prime minister, who was supposed to be charged a week ago.

Amid fears that the street will return to violence that has killed about 460 people and injured 25,000, the authority appears paralyzed.

On the one hand, pro-Iran allies, with the speaker of parliament, Muhammad al-Halbousi, are pushing for the appointment of their candidate.

On the other hand, the President of the Republic Barham Salih, according to a source in the Presidency of the Republic, puts a definitive veto on Al-Suhail, a former member of the Shiite leader Moqtada Al-Sadr’s movement, who moved to the camp of his opponent, former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who is loyal to Iran.
