Iraqi militias take down Baghdad’s godfather of gambling

Iraq’s biggest ever crackdown on illegal gambling has resulted in the arrest of an organized crime leader who reportedly controlled all gambling in Baghdad.
Last week, gun-toting members of Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria (IMIS), a coalition of Shia militia groups that reportedly operate with funding from Iran, swooped down on a number of Baghdad hotels in search of “mafias, roulette clubs, casinos, drug dealers and prostitution rings.”

Local media reported that the raids resulted in the arrest of Hamza al-Shammari, allegedly the godfather of Iraq’s largest criminal organization, along with around 25 of his minions. The IMIS claimed al-Shammari “controlled all gambling, prostitution and drug trafficking sites” in the Baghdad area.
Along with the arrested suspects, the Operation Meridian raids – named after the hotel in which al-Shammari was reportedly holed up – resulted in the seizure of slot machines and other gambling gear, plus some narcotics, all of which was reportedly turned over to the Iraqi national security forces.

However, other media outlets quoted a security researcher saying that al-Shammari had some connections with the IMIS, and that the raids were probably launched “because he was not sharing the spoils of his misdeeds with the rest of the security services racket.”
While the IMIS is technically part of the Iraqi security apparatus, it operates with a degree of independence. The Iraqi government has yet to comment on the operation, but the IMIS claimed their raids were conducted “under the guidance of” Prime Minister Adil Abd al-Mahdi.

The Baghdad bust wasn’t the only illegal game recently rumbled in Iraq. In mid-July, police and security forces raided a building in Erbil, which is located in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq, where they found “an electronic casino.”

This illegal business, which reportedly had its headquarters in Cyprus, was “linked to the internet,” and customers were given debit cards they could reload and gamble from home via their computers or phones. The local mayor said “unimaginable amounts of money were illegally sent out of Kurdistan through this casino daily.”

One doesn’t usually equate gambling with Iraq, unless one’s talking about the Baghdad Equestrian Club, which was founded by the British way back in 2010, shut down by Saddam Hussein, then reopened in a different location in 2003 following the ill-advised US invasion.

"The effects of genocide and the beginning of reconstruction."

Iraq: Sunni forces move to internationalize cliff bodies and warnings of complicity to obscure crime

Thursday 15 2019 - 01:00

Baghdad - d. Hamid Abdullah:

An Iraqi lawmaker has unveiled a move by Sunni forces to internationalize the issue of unidentified bodies recently found in the Jurf al-Sakhar area, closed more than five years ago.
MP Abdullah al-Kharbit said that the government's inability to reveal the fate of the disappeared, who have been absent for nearly five years, confirms its inability to provide clear answers to the relatives of those who say the Anbar Provincial Council says 2,800 of them were kidnapped at the security detachments of armed groups.
While politicians from the Sunni component criticized the position of the speaker of the Iraqi parliament, Mohammed Halbousi, who described dozens of unidentified bodies found in the area of Jurf al-Sakhr as "without a sectarian fingerprint" said the former governor of Nineveh and the leadership of the coalition coalition decision Atheel Nujaifi that the issue is not the number of bodies, but the nature of the crime committed And the identity of the victims, adding that the whole matter is the file of the absentees, which is still open without the government to provide a radical solution to it.
Information about the number of unidentified bodies that have been kept for five years in the refrigerators of the dead varied.
The city of Jurf al-Sakhr remained closed to the security, parliamentary, humanitarian and governmental authorities, where it was entrusted with an armed separation since its liberation from ISIS in 2014.
Political demands for access to the city and knowledge of what is going on inside Iraq are mounting, with Iraqi lawmakers expecting there to be weapons factories or sophisticated weapons stores similar to those that were struck by unknown bombs in the suburb of Doura three days ago and have caused significant damage to the area's residents.
A senior Iraqi officer said some of the bodies found belonged to ISIS operatives.
Babel police chief Maj. Gen. Ali Koh al-Zughaibi said the bodies began with the number one, unidentified, and ended with the number 31, a well-known person, but no one had been asked.
The question that the Sunni forces are looking for a satisfactory answer is: How did they kill them, who killed them, how and when?
These questions may be difficult for the Mahdi government to provide a clear answer.

Al-Karbouli: He calls for dissolving the army only for a foreign agent, and he does not bid on him except a mercenary
15/08/2019
The head of the parliamentary bloc, Mohammed al-Karbouli, is the army's "first security institution in Iraq."
Karbouli said in a tweet on Twitter that "the army is the first Iraqi security institution to which the Iraqis go, and is the only one that hearts to love."
He pointed out that he "only calls for the dissolution of a foreign agent, and only mercenaries bid on him."
The leader of the Nujaba Movement, Yusuf al-Nasseri, described the Iraqi army in a televised speech as a "mercenary" and called for its dissolution, and assign its tasks to the popular mobilization.
The Joint Operations Command denounced this strange statement, calling on its owner to withdraw it and apologize for it, because this statement does not constitute an offense to the heroic Iraqi army, but to all martyrs and sacrificers of his sons and to the Iraqi people who sanctify his army, which is the army of the country and the citizen and made great sacrifices to protect Iraq and the people.

8-15-2019   Intel Guru MarkZ   [Is Trump doing all he can to help us.]  Trump is the first President to want this reset…the first one not to actively stop it…  In Iraq. No new value on the dinar yet. Nothing posted in the Gazette today.  Still hearing the street rate is $3.91...Our contract rates should be about $2 higher.

8-14-2019   Intel Guru MarkZ   [Can Iraq go without the GCR?]  They can...it would only be an in-country RV because of the Gold treaty...That’s what Kuwait did…they kept it in-country and quiet for 10 days before it went international.
8-14-2019   Newshound/Intel Guru Adam Montana   [My personal belief is the corruption factor has to be eliminated and/or all previous crooks have to be dealt with. Fact is, corruption exists and always will - yet progress still continues. We will never see a complete elimination of it, so the question becomes “what level of corruption will allow for the next progression?”  I wholeheartedly believe Iraq has made enough progress in this area to allow an RV.

8-14-2019   Newshound Guru Dinar Investor - Jeff    Will the smaller denomination come out before the RI/RV In my opinion, no...Banks are stocked and ready to go. Basically the day the rate changes the banks will have the drawers stocked ready to start passing them out.  It's that simple.  So no they are not going to come out ahead of time.  They'll come out the same morning that the rate changes.  It's all going to happen together at the same time...

8-14-2019   Newshound/Intel Guru Mnt Goat  Again, I am telling everyone what is holding back the reinstatement of the Iraqi dinar. It is corruption and the fight to clean it up. It is also not having their constitution “fully” implemented. This is a necessity. While in this process the CBI proceeds to continue with the project to delete the zeros.  Yes, we all know there much corruption even at the minor level but in Iraq it is also massive and the authorities are not going to let the dinar reinstate until this is settle to their satisfaction...

8-14-2019   Newshound Guru Adam Montana   We are at the end of Eid al-Adha, but that's not a holiday that brings business to a complete screeching halt like Ramadan. There is a lot of movement regarding the HCL... Article quote:  "the committee did not address the discussion of the law of oil and gas, stressing the interest of the Committee on this subject and it will be a priority to legislate this law during the next phase."  This Iraqi dinar RV really looks like it's in the final stages...
8-14-2019   Newshound Guru Dinar Investor - Jeff   Even though parliament isn't in session...can they still revalue the currency The answer to that is yes and no.  Let me tell you why it's yes.  Technically there are laws in place.  The CBI is completely autonomous from the government.  They are a separate group, a separate structure.  They do their own thing with the money.  The government does their own thing with laws and legislation.  BUT in this instance the CBI made it very clear they are seeking stability.  That's why we're waiting on the formation of the government.  Because of how much money has been stolen from the government.  This is very important to Iraq to remove all the corruption and get a solid formed technocrat government in place...

8-14-2019   Intel Guru Frank26    ...the CBI is on a vicious campaign to educate the citizens and make sure that it works with them because if it doesn't work internally...the reinstatement of the Iraqi dinar will never leave the country and go externally and internationally and grow with value...everyday the CBI is letting you know and the citizens know... [via firefly77] our electronic billboards are showing the ATM machines.  The citizens MasterCard is plastered all over these billboards...it's a commercial but at the same time it's education...

8-14-2019   Intel Guru MarkZ    [I just read ...that the Dong wont be revalued for 2 to 3 years AFTER the RV starts...Thoughts?]  I still believe its in the first basket...I saw that rumor which makes me think its misinformation or smoke…Vietnam holds a great deal of Iraqi dinar in their treasury/foreign currency reserves just like Iraq holds a great deal of VND. …it would be a huge imbalance if they did not go together…Remember when Kuwait RV’d they said they were months or years away from revaluing…remember in the 90’s China said in a number of articles that no way were they ready to rv their currency and bam…they did it the next day. IMO this disinformation means we are very close.

8-14-2019 Newshound Guru Kaperoni ...There is no way the dinar can substantially revalue..especially at $3+. Iraq simply has to much currency in circulation...It is simply impossible for such an event to occur. An RV or RI even at 1 to $1 is not possible with 42 trillion dinar in circulation. That is 3 times the worlds money supply. Iraq could never afford such an event. The only possible solution would be a slow growth via a float as investment comes into Iraq to offset pressure/inflation. They then could collect dinar as it gradually appreciates reducing the money supply and liability. I know, the speed or rate in which a currency appreciates is based on the pressure created on the financial system which is controlled by the amount of investment. So the faster the investment or greater the investment, the faster the appreciation will be of the currency.
