Oil prices rise after three weeks of decline
Oil prices rose Friday after touching a three-week low in the previous session, in response to a record decline in U.S. growth as the coronavirus hit the world's largest oil-consuming economy.
Brent crude rose 41 cents, or 1 percent, to $43.35 a barrel by 0702 GMT. On Thursday, Brent closed down 1.9 percent after touching its lowest level since July 10.
U.S. crude gained 43 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $40.35 after falling 3.3 percent in the previous session, rising from levels not seen since July 10.
Brent is on track for a fourth-month gain, U.S. crude is heading toward a third monthly gain, and record cruderose from record lows in April when most of the world was in general isolation.
But the increase in casualties and their spread around the world highlights the continuing threat of oil demand.
The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies plan to increase production from Next Saturday, adding about 1.5 million barrels per day to global supplies.
Globally, the economy's outlook has been bleak, with increased covone infections raising the risk of renewed public isolation and threatening any recovery, according to a Reuters poll of more than 500 economists.
U.S. GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP) FELL AT an ANNUAL PACE OF 32.9 PERCENT, THE LARGEST DECLINE IN OUTPUT SINCE RECORD-KEEPING BEGAN IN 1947, ACCORDING TO NEWS THURSDAY.
In Germany, there was a record drop in output, with Europe's largest economy contracting by 10.1 percent on a quarter-on-quarter in april-June.
Data from the Ministry of Industry showed today that Japan's oil imports fell by more than 30 percent in June to about 1.9 million barrels per day, while sales of petroleum products fell 10 percent.
Washington expands its sanctions on Iran and targets the mineral sector and the Revolutionary Guards
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday that his country has decided to expand the scope of sanctions targeting Iran's mineral sector .
Pompeo, (July 31, 2020), added that the new sanctions target 22 items that he said are used in nuclear, military or ballistic missile programs and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
Pompeo described this as a "significant expansion" of sanctions related to minerals imposed on Iran and supervised by the US State Department, which would allow Washington to blacklist those who deliberately transport those items.
Pompeo added: "Under the same provisions of the law, I continue to confirm that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) controls the construction sector in Iran."
And the US Secretary of State continued: "The construction company of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and many of its subsidiaries are still subject to sanctions by the United Nations because they participated directly in building the uranium enrichment site in Fordow."
Pompeo said that "as a result of this decision taken by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, any transfer of knowledge of certain materials, including graphite or raw or semi-manufactured minerals, to and from Iran for use in relation to Iran's construction sector remains subject to sanctions."
On May 8, 2018, US President Donald Trump announced his country's withdrawal from the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and the major powers in March 2015.
Since America left the deal, Trump has imposed sanctions aimed at stifling Iran's economy and curbing Tehran's regional influence.
The sanctions also affected vital sectors and prominent figures in Iran, such as the oil sector, the guide of the Iranian revolution, Ali Khamenei, and the Revolutionary Guards.
The new US sanctions come a few less than 3 months before the end of the UN resolution banning the sale of conventional weapons to Iran (on October 18 next year), according to a resolution issued in 2015.
And while America and European countries want to extend the resolution, Russia and China, two of the five permanent powers with a veto in the Security Council, are seeking to end it.

The Iraqi Stock Exchange announced on Monday that it was suspending its activities for 12 days on the occasion of eid al-Adha and a curfew.

Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazemi receives the President and members of the Electoral Commission
The Prime Minister, Mr. Mustafa Al-Kazemi, received today, Thursday, the Chairman and members of the Independent High Electoral Commission.
During the meeting, the early elections were discussed and prepared for, and the requirements for conducting them will be provided at a date to be announced later.
Mr. Al-Kazemi stressed that the government is proceeding with holding early elections, which is one of the most important goals in the government curriculum, and his Excellency stressed the government's willingness to provide all the requirements that fall upon it, with regard to allocating funds to the commission and providing a safe environment for holding fair elections that meet international standards.
Mr. Al-Kazemi urged the parliament to expedite the election law legislation within a short period, as a condition for the electoral process to start in a sound atmosphere.
For his part, Jalil Adnan Khalaf, Chairman of the Independent High Electoral Commission, presented a report on the commission's preparations for the early elections and the requirements for their success.

The Independent High Electoral Commission, today, Thursday, called for some amendments to the election law to ensure free and fair elections.
The Commission stated in a statement that, at the invitation of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, members of the Board of Commissioners headed by Council Speaker Judge Jalil Adnan Khalaf, and in the presence of the Prime Minister’s Adviser for Electoral Affairs Abdul Hussein Al-Hindawi, attended an expanded meeting to discuss the commission’s preparations for the upcoming elections and ways to succeed in accordance with international standards.
She added, that the Chairperson of the Board of Commissioners presented at the beginning of the meeting the work plan of the Commission for the next five months, with a schedule of specific timings for each work at the financial, administrative and technical levels.
Judge Council Speaker Judge Jalil Adnan Khalaf stressed, according to the statement, the necessity of completing the law and its annexes, as well as bypassing the administrative routine that delays the specified times for the schedule of operations, and financial, technical and logistical electoral needs.
For its part, the head of the electoral administration, Ahlam Al-Jabri, indicated the necessity of excluding the commission from the financial restrictions that prevent it from resuming its technical work, stressing the importance of installing the contract employees working in the commission and attracting those excluded from them because they have long years of experience in technical work.
