US Calls for End of "Violations" on Iraq's Sovereignty

BasNews 13/01/2020 - 00:57 Published in Iraq

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called for an end for "violations" on Iraq's sovereignty by groups "not loyal" to the country.
Pompeo's call came after a rocket attack on Iraq's Balad airbase, which houses the US forces, on Sunday evening, injuring four Iraqi soldiers, according to Iraq's Security Media Cell.
"Outraged by reports of another rocket attack on an Iraqi airbase. I pray for speedy recovery of the injured and call on the Government of Iraq to hold those responsible for this attack on the Iraqi people accountable," the US top diplomat wrote on Twitter.
"These continued violations of Iraq’s sovereignty by groups not loyal to the Iraqi government must end," he added.
The Pompeo did not make any direct accusations, but the pro-Iranian militia groups have repeatedly threatened to target the US forces in Iraq.
At least eight rocket rounds were fired at Balad air base, located about 80 kilometers north of capital Baghdad.

The head of the Defense and Security Committee in the Iraqi parliament, Muhammad Raza, has spoken that Baghdad has resumed negotiations with Moscow on purchasing S-300 systems.
It is noteworthy that Iraq has been trying to buy Russian air defense systems since 2017, but the threat of economic sanctions by the United States continues to hinder negotiations.

The departure of the prominent Iraqi politician, writer and figure, Aziz Al-Hajj

by  Iraq News , Culture and Arts 2 hours ago
Media journalist Alaa Al-Hattab wrote ...
Far from politics, close to its past history
The controversial Communist Aziz al-Hajj passed away at the age of 94
I know that I am talking about a very big problematic figure, and here I do not recommend, defend or criticize his positions.
At the time, I could not believe that he would agree to conduct a TV interview that recalls history and explains it at the research and criticism table.
When I had an extensive conversation with the late former Communist Party Secretary Aziz Muhammad in Arbil and the conversation reached us for the years 1964 and beyond until 1967 and the dissolution of Al-Hajj and the formation of the Southern Marshes Movement and beyond, the late Aziz Muhammad told me after the end of the interview that he is continuing with Aziz Al-Hajj and in vain I asked him for a number His phone is in Paris, where the latter has been sinning for more than 40 years. In it, Aziz Mohamed told me that Al-Hajj does not agree to conduct any press interview and does not want to “turn the painful” as if Aziz Muhammad told me: Alaa leave the topic, but my journalistic curiosity made me continue my request, The man, Aziz Muhammad, gave me the Hajj phone number, a few days later I called With him, and if he answers me, do you prefer me?
Because he is old and his reputation is weak, I tried to explain who I was and why the call was in vain and the phone was closed.
After about half an hour, I called the call, and this time I presented myself to him and asked him, Doctor. Do you want to leave this world while you are in the eyes of the Iraqis a murderer and a traitor? My question sparked his interest and shocked him, so he asked me angrily why?

Al-Abadi Coalition: A major political and popular refusal to renew confidence for Abd al-Mahdi ... this is a dream!

13 January 2020

Baghdad / .. Al-Nasr coalition, led by Haider al-Abadi, confirmed today, the existence of a large political and popular rejection to renew confidence for the resigned Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, while there are political blocs dreaming about this.

A coalition spokesman, Ayat Muzaffar Nuri, told "Eye of Iraq News" that "there are political forces dreaming about the return of renewed confidence to the resigned Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, because this matter is impossible to achieve, as there is a great political and popular rejection of this step, and it will not take place whatever some parties attempt that".

Nuri indicated that "Abdul-Mahdi has proven his failure to run the state, and the situation in Iraq was less tense, but we are now living in a very tense situation and a major international crisis, and Abdul-Mahdi is unable to cross the country to safety, but to stay longer, will increase crises, And the matter may go beyond the limitless consequences.

Pompeo is angry at the bombing of Balad Air Force Base and he hopes the injured Iraqis will recover

An F-16 plane at Balad Air Force Base, north of Baghdad
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemned the missile attack that targeted Sunday, Balad Air Force Base, north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, which includes American soldiers.
"I feel angry after the missile attack on Balad Air Force Base," Pompeo said in a tweet on Twitter, calling for the Iraqi government to hold those responsible for the attack accountable.
Pompeo added that "these continued violations of Iraqi sovereignty by groups that do not owe allegiance to the Iraqi government must end."
The minister wished the speedy recovery of those injured by these missiles.
Four Iraqi soldiers, including two officers, were wounded by eight rockets that fell on Sunday evening, on Balad Air Base.
The majority of US forces left Balad after the recent escalation between the United States and Iran on Iraqi soil.
An Iraqi military source confirmed to AFP that "there are no more than 15 American soldiers and one plane remaining in the base."
On the other hand, Iraqi security officials indicated to the agency that "more than 90 percent of the American advisors and members of Lockheed Martin and Salyport companies specialized in operating Iraqi F-16s withdrew from the base of Balad to the Taji and Erbil camps."
Since the end of October, Iraqi military bases have become the target of missile attacks. Dozens of missiles fell on them, and one of them, on December 27, killed an American contractor.
Washington accuses factions loyal to Iran of being behind the attacks. Iraq and the darkness of history.

KRG Responds to Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah: Don’t Dare to Disrespect Kurds

 13/01/2020 - 01:31 Published in Kurdistan

ERBIL — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) spokesperson Jutyar Adil has strongly responded to recent remarks by Hassan Nasrallah of the Lebanese Hezbollah who disrespected Kurds and the nation’s leader Masoud Barzani.
“It comes as surprise that you, with a shaky voice and in a childish manner, attack the Kurdistan Region and the leader of a nation. You disrespect a brave nation while you hide under the ground,” reads a statement by the KRG spokesperson.
In a speech delivered to remember Iran’s top general Qasem Soleimani, Nasrollah claimed that the Iranians saved Erbil and Kurdistan Region against the Islamic State. He insulted Kurds and their political leaders in his speech which angered many in Kurdistan.
“It was the Peshmerga force who protected Erbil and Kurdistan, not anyone else,” the statement emphasized. “However, we have thanked everyone who supported us in this way.”
Adil raises questions about the possible intentions behind Nasrollah’s provocative remarks against the Kurds.
He also warned that Nasrollah is not at a level to even speak about prominent Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani.
“President [Masoud] Barzani is the symbol of a nation’s resistance, and a coward like you is cheaper than making such remarks.”

Infrastructure to drive GCC growth in 2020: World Bank

    Iraq, January 13, 2020

Infrastructure investment and business climate reforms are seen advancing economic growth among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) economies to 2.2 per cent in 2020, said the World Bank in its latest global economy report.

Meanwhile, economic growth in the Mena region is projected to accelerate to a modest 2.4 per cent in 2020, largely on higher investment and stronger business climates, according to the January 2020 Global Economic Prospects report. Among oil exporters, growth is expected to pick up to 2 per cent.

Iran’s economy is expected to stabilize after a contractionary year as the impact of US sanctions tapers and oil production and exports stabilize, while Algeria’s growth is anticipated to rise to 1.9 per cent as policy uncertainty abates and investment picks up.

Growth in oil importers is expected to rise to 4.4 per cent. Higher investment and private consumption are expected to support a rise to 5.8 per cent in FY2020 growth in Egypt.

The World Bank report said that global economic growth is forecast to edge up to 2.5 per cent in 2020 as investment and trade gradually recover from last year’s significant weakness, but noted that downward risks persist.

Growth among advanced economies as a group is anticipated to slip to 1.4 per cent in 2020 in part due to continued softness in manufacturing. Growth in emerging market and developing economies is expected to accelerate this year to 4.1 per cent.

This rebound is not broad-based; instead, it assumes improved performance of a small group of large economies, some of which are emerging from a period of substantial weakness. About a third of emerging market and developing economies are projected to decelerate this year due to weaker-than-expected exports and investment.

“With growth in emerging and developing economies likely to remain slow, policymakers should seize the opportunity to undertake structural reforms that boost broad-based growth, which is essential to poverty reduction,” said World Bank Group vice president for Equitable Growth, Finance and Institutions, Ceyla Pazarbasioglu.

“Steps to improve the business climate, the rule of law, debt management, and productivity can help achieve sustained growth.”

US growth is forecast to slow to 1.8 per cent this year, reflecting the negative impact of earlier tariff increases and elevated uncertainty. Euro Area growth is projected to slip to a downwardly revised 1 per cent in 2020 amid weak industrial activity.

Downside risks to the global outlook predominate, and their materialization could slow growth substantially. These risks include a re-escalation of trade tensions and trade policy uncertainty, a sharper-than expected downturn in major economies, and financial turmoil in emerging market and developing economies. Even if the recovery in emerging and developing economy growth takes place as expected, per capita growth would remain well below long-term averages and well below levels necessary to achieve poverty alleviation goals.

Regional growth in Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to pick up to 2.9 per cent in 2020, assuming investor confidence improves in some large economies, energy bottlenecks ease, a pickup in oil production contributes to recovery in oil exporters and robust growth continues among agricultural commodity exporters.

The forecast is weaker than previously expected reflecting softer demand from key trading partners, lower commodity prices, and adverse domestic developments in several countries. In South Africa, growth is expected to pick up to 0.9 per cent, assuming the new administration’s reform agenda gathers pace, policy uncertainty wanes, and investment gradually recovers.

Growth in Nigeria expected to edge up to 2.1 per cent as the macroeconomic framework is not conducive to confidence. Growth in Angola is anticipated to accelerate to 1.5 per cent, assuming that ongoing reforms provide greater macroeconomic stability, improve the business environment, and bolster private investment. In the West African Economic and Monetary Union, growth is expected to hold steady at 6.4 per cent. In Kenya, growth is seen edging up to 6 per cent.

    Gold Buying Precarious
The recent gold buying driving secular highs looks really precarious. Gold broke out to new upleg highs in a geopolitical spike. But historically these soon reverse into proportional selling. Spec gold-futures positioning was already way up at record extremes even before the US and Iran started shooting, so traders' buying firepower is largely exhausted. And gold investors haven’t been interested in buying. GLD’s holdings, the leading daily proxy of gold investment demand, have barely budged

EFPs and PNTs are "derivative" transactions which enable the bullion banks to settle futures with cash or some other form of gold derivatives like shares of GLD.

NZD/CAD: Further Downside LikelyThe NZD/CAD pair has recently experienced significant upside into the 2019 year-end, alongside other NZD crosses. However, this upside has likely exceeded the bounds of what New Zealand's central bank is comfortable with, increasing the chance of intervention. Regardless of whether intervention occurs, further softening of the NZD is likely against the CAD, especially given that the bond market is apparently optimistic with respect to short-term interest rates. US population growth is the lowest its been since 1918. Here's why that's terrible news for the economy.
The US population barely grew in 2019, amounting to a 0.48% trickle unseen in a century. It carries major economic implications for the nation's future. Major factors of the past year's slowdown included fewer US births, a reduced number of immigrants, and Americans living longer, but it reflects trends that stretched back the last decade. The slowdown in population growth is playing a key role in sober assessments of 2% US economic growth throughout the 2020s. It could mean fewer, prime-age

America threatens to "deprive" Iraq of billions of dollars!

The Independent / The United States still appears to be sticking to its forces staying in Iraq for a longer period, despite the loud voices calling for their departure following the killing of the prominent leader of the Revolutionary Guards Qassem Soleimani, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of the Popular Mobilization, with a lightning American operation in Baghdad, before 9 days.
After Washington hinted at sanctions that it will impose on Baghdad, if its politicians continue to put forth initiatives aimed at removing American forces from their countries, the American Wall Street Journal said that the United States threatened to deprive Iraq of billions of dollars.
The newspaper pointed out, quoting unnamed sources, that the US State Department threatened Baghdad to freeze a bank account belonging to Iraq in the Federal Reserve (the American central bank).
Iraq uses this account to deposit billions of dollars in oil revenues.
And this decision means, in the event of its occurrence, that Iraq will not be able to withdraw any funds from this balance, which could lead to the collapse of the Egyptian-Iraqi regime and the paralysis of the local economy.
And the "Wall Street Journal" said that a US official informed the resigned Iraqi Prime Minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi, in a phone call, last Wednesday, of the new punishment and the damage that would result from it.
In the event that the step is implemented, freezing Iraqi assets in the account will be an unprecedented step.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York provides banking services to about 250 central banks and government institutions around the world.
The Iraqi parliament had issued, in early January, a non-binding resolution calling for the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq, and the decision received support from Abdul Mahdi.
The parliament’s move came after US forces killed a Soleimani missile and an engineer near Baghdad airport, in what Baghdad considered a violation of its sovereignty.
Then, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose severe sanctions if Iraq went ahead with the removal of US forces from the country.
More than 5 thousand American soldiers are stationed in a number of military bases in Iraq, and they are part of the international coalition to fight ISIS, which was established in 2014 to confront the terrorist organization.
The Federal Reserve Authority has the power to deny countries facing sanctions from disposing of their bank accounts.
Indeed, the bank froze an account belonging to the Iraqi government in 2015 for several weeks, after doubts erupted over the possibility of Iraqi funds leaking into Iranian banks and the terrorist organization "ISIS".
Officials at the Bank and the US State Department and the Iraqi embassy declined to comment on this information.
It is not clear the size of the Iraqi funds with the American bank, but according to the information "The Wall Street Journal", the bank has 3 billion dollars for the Central Bank of Iraq until the end of 2018.

There were and are videos...that showed the process of what they are doing with the large notes. They were and may still be destroying them...In the video they were not showing worn and torn notes. They were showing good quality 25k notes and in very large quantities. The CBI website shows in the Charts the reduction. Charts on that site are for international use and they are extremely accurate for many reasons too.

The President of the National Wisdom Movement, Mr. Ammar Al-Hakim, called on notables, wise people and demonstrators to pay attention to agendas that exposed their noble goals and societal peace to a major setback.

Al-Hakim said in a tweet on Twitter, "It is unfortunate that the demanding demonstrations are accompanied by irresponsible actions, including the infringement of public and private properties, and the closure of official departments and institutions, schools and institutes whose disruption constitutes a disruption of the interests of the country."

"From here, we condemn what happened at Wasit University, by a group affiliated with the demonstrators, which led to the burning of its gate and the occurrence of bloody events that led to the injury of dozens of protesters and security forces."

Mr. Ammar al-Hakim continued, “Committing such unacceptable acts legally and legally, as the Supreme Religious Authority has repeatedly stated, negatively affects the demonstrations calling for reform and distorting its peaceful path,” calling on wise people, dignitaries and demonstrators to pay attention to “such agendas that expose their noble goals and societal peace to a major setback.”
