Protesters attack the US embassy in Baghdad and Trump says Iran will pay a "heavy price"

The United States announced on Tuesday that it will send additional forces to protect its embassy in Baghdad, after thousands of Iraqi protesters attacked it, chanting "Death to America!", Denouncing the air strikes that targeted the headquarters of an Iraqi faction loyal to Iran on Sunday night.
While US President Donald Trump held Iran responsible for the attack, Tehran condemned Washington's "rudeness", calling on it to reconsider its policies in the region.
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Tehran would pay a "heavy price" after thousands of Iraqi supporters stormed the US embassy in Baghdad.
Trump added that "Iran will bear full responsibility for any loss of life or damage to our facilities," and thanked the Iraqi leaders for their "quick response" to protect the embassy.
"They will pay a heavy price! This is not a warning, it is a threat. Happy New Year!"
And at night, Trump called the resigned Iraqi Prime Minister, Adel Abdul-Mahdi, during which the US president stressed "the need to protect American installations in Iraq and the people working in them," according to the White House.
Trump had accused Iran of being behind the attack on the US embassy, saying on Twitter, "Iran has orchestrated an attack against the US embassy in Iraq, and they will be held fully responsible for that," calling on Iraq to "use its forces to protect the embassy."
Iraqi President Barham Salih condemned the attack on the embassy, while US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Iraqi leaders that the United States was prepared to "protect" the Americans and "defend" them.
A State Department statement said that both Abdul-Mahdi and Saleh assured Pompeo in two phone calls, "that they take their responsibility seriously and will ensure the safety and security of American employees and American property."
The statement stated that Pompeo "clearly warned that the United States will protect and defend its citizens who are there to support a sovereign and independent Iraq."
The Pentagon announced the dispatch of "additional forces" to ensure the security of the diplomatic mission, and a helicopter carrying Marines arrived at the site later.

"The Department of Defense is working closely with the State Department to ensure the safety of our embassy and our staff in Baghdad," US Defense Secretary Mark Esber said in a statement. "We will send additional forces to support our embassy staff."
The powerful crowd, which forms part of the Iraqi forces, reported that twenty people were wounded.
In the vicinity of the embassy,hundreds of supporters of the pro-Iranian camp protested against the American air strikes that targeted Sunday night the locations of the Hezbollah Brigades in western Iraq, killing 25 fighters.
The raids came in response to the killing of an American in an attack with 36 missiles that targeted a base in northern Iraq, which contains American soldiers.
The attack on the Americans is the latest in a series of rocket attacks against sites where US forces are in Iraq.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, while American sources have accused the Hezbollah Brigades, a faction of the Popular Mobilization, of being behind it.
Advocates and fighters in the popular crowd gathered in the vicinity of the embassy to funeral the dead, the first time that protesters were able to reach the severely protected American embassy, with a series of checkpoints located inside the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad.

This development comes in the midst of an unprecedented popular protest movement that Iraq has been witnessing since October against the political class accused of corruption, and against the broad Iranian influence in Iraq.
Iraq has been calling for its two most prominent American and Iranian allies, not to turn its territories into a battleground between them. Men, many of them dressed in the crowd of uniformed forces and a number of women, flocked to the US embassy since morning and crossed the security barriers all the way to the wall surrounding the embassy, smashed the surveillance cameras installed on the outer wall, and threw rocks at the watchtowers and burned some of them.
Then, they stormed the main gate of the embassy to the entrance where the embassy security personnel searched the visitors, according to correspondents told AFP at the scene.
American forces fired some bullets into the air, then tear gas and smoke bombs to disperse the demonstrators.
Two hours later, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi called on the demonstrators to evacuate the area.
A portion of the protesters, who exited the Green Zone, complied with his call, while Iraqi special units were stationed around the embassy.
A number of protesters set up tents near the embassy and began an open sit-in.

And demanded the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades and the pro-Iranian factions within the framework of the popular crowd supporting the Iraqi forces, after the recent US strikes, to expel the "American enemy" from the country.
Before attacking the embassy,the protesters were participating in the funeral of the fighters killed in the American strikes.
They carried banners, one of which read: "To Parliament: American forces must be removed, otherwise they will be expelled." On another, they say, "Close the American embassy in Baghdad," and "To America ... We will respond with force."
The protesters also wrote phrases including "two leaders of Soleimani," referring to the commander of the Iranian "Quds Force" Qassem Soleimani, who is responsible for foreign operations and the architect of Iran's military strategy in the region.
Several of the most prominent leaders of the PMF participated in the protests, including the head of the PMF, Faleh al-Fayyad, his deputy Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and the leader of the Asa’ib al-Haq faction, Qais Khazali.
And the Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq issued a statement saying that "the prayer on the embassy of evil, espionage and conspiracy is the first lesson of the first chapter of the next pages of the pages of pride and honor."
"The next step will be to pass a law to remove the occupying forces and their accessories from Iraq," the statement continued.
The United States has about 5,200 soldiers in Iraq to train security forces, fight the Islamic State, and prevent his return to the country.
The recent US strikes have strained relations between Washington and Baghdad.
The Iraqi government announced on Monday that the strikes on the Iraqi-Syrian border are pushing it to "review the relationship" with the United States. An official statement said, "The American forces relied on their own conclusions and their political priorities, not the priorities as viewed by the government and people of Iraq."

Apache Helicopters, Additional Troops Sent to Protect US Embassy in Baghdad

ERBIL — The United States and Coalition against the Islamic State (IS) have deployed additional forces and Apache helicopters to protect the US embassy in Baghdad against pro-Iran protesters.
Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Washington was expecting Iraq to fulfill its obligations and help protecting the diplomatic mission and its facilities.
“We have taken appropriate force protection actions to ensure the safety of American citizens, military personnel and diplomats in country, and to ensure our right of self-defense,” Esper said in a statement hours after Hashd al-Shaabi supporters attempted storming the US embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone.
“As in all countries, we rely on host nation forces to assist in the protection of our personnel in country, and we call on the Government of Iraq to fulfill its international responsibilities to do so,” the Pentagon chief added.
Spokesperson for the US-led Coalition shared similar information, publishing a video showing AH-64 Apaches flying over the embassy to provide the staff with protection.

ERBIL — Nearly 20 militiamen were killed and many others were injured in airstrikes which targeted the military bases belonging to pro-Iranian militia groups in Iraq and Syria.
Initial media reports claimed that the US warplanes were responsible for the airstrikes, allegedly in retaliation for the recent repeated rocket attacks against the US positions in Iraq. They allegedly targeted five bases of Kataib Hezbollah — a militia group operating under the umbrella of pro-Iranian Hashd al-Shaabi — in Iraq and Syria on Sunday evening.
"In response to repeated Kata'ib Hizbollah (KH) attacks on Iraqi bases that host Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) coalition forces, U.S. forces have conducted precision defensive strikes against five KH facilities in Iraq and Syria that will degrade KH's ability to conduct future attacks against OIR coalition forces," reads a statement by US Department of State.
"The five targets include three KH locations in Iraq and two in Syria. These locations included weapon storage facilities and command and control locations that KH uses to plan and execute attacks on OIR coalition forces."
Confirming to Reuters, Iraqi security and militia sources said that at least 18 militiamen were killed and over 50 others were wounded in the US bombardments on Sunday.
The US further warned Iran and Tehran-backed militia groups to halt their attacks on US and coalition forces and respect Iraq's sovereignty.
"Iran and their KH proxy forces must cease their attacks on U.S. and coalition forces, and respect Iraq's sovereignty, to prevent additional defensive actions by U.S. forces," the press release concluded.

National Security Council condemns US air strikes as violation of Iraqi sovereignty

The National Security Council held an emergency meeting in Baghdad to discuss the US air strikes against Iraqi forces belonging to Popular Mobilization Units on the Iraqi-Syrian border and the repercussions of this attack.
Following the meeting, the Council said in a statement: “The Iraqi Government condemns this act and considers it a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty. This is a serious violation of the rules of engagement of the Coalition forces, including the US forces, in carrying out operations without the approval of the Iraqi Government.”
It added: “This operation targeted Iraqi forces holding a significant front on the border [with Syria] against Daesh terrorists. This endangers the security and sovereignty of Iraq and threatens the security of all.”
“Tens of members of the Iraqi forces have fallen or injured as a result of this attack. The US Forces relied on their own conclusions and political priorities, not the priorities as assessed by the government and people of Iraq.”
The Council underscored that Iraq has repeatedly stressed its refusal to be a battlefield or a party to any regional or international conflict, and has made strenuous efforts to prevent frictions and reduce clashes in a country and region that have lived for decades in an atmosphere of conflict, interference, occupation and wars.
The Council affirmed that “this attack violates the goals and principles for which the Global Coalition was established, and compels Iraq to review its relationship together with the security, political and legal operational framework in a manner that preserves the sovereignty and security of the country, protects the lives of its people and promotes common interests.”

The Iraqi ambassador to Iran, Jawad Saad Kandil, confirmed on Tuesday that raising the volume of trade exchange with Iran to the level of 20 billion dollars has become on the agenda of the two countries.
The Fars news agency quoted Qandil as saying during the meeting with the governor of the central governorate (center), "The inter-trade volume touches 12 billion dollars," noting that "there are various projects and ideas presented by Iran and Iraq in order to reach the desired commercial level."
He added that "raising the volume of trade exchange with Iran to the level of 20 billion dollars has become on the agenda of the two countries."
Qandil stressed that "six million Iranians visit Iraq annually in exchange for the influx of three million Iraqis to Iran," noting that "3.5 million Iranian visitors participate in the march of the fortieth anniversary of Imam Hussein this year."
He added that "raising the volume of trade exchange with Iran to the level of 20 billion dollars has become on the agenda of the two countries."
