The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic artery for energy transfer between East and West

The presence of Iranian naval forces in the Strait of Hormuz is the biggest threat to oil transportation Photo: AFP
The width of the strait is 33 kilometers in its smallest part, but the navigational path is only 3 kilometers wide in both directions.
The US Energy Information Administration estimated that 18.5 million barrels of sea-transported oil per day crossed the Strait in 2016. That accounted for about 30 percent of the crude and other oil liquids shipped by sea in 2016, according to a Reuters report.
The estimated 17.2 million barrels per day of crude and condensates were transported across the strait in 2017, and about 17.4 million barrels per day in the first half of 2018. With global oil consumption reaching about 100 million barrels a day, it means that about five Across the strait, most of the crude exports are exported from Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq, all of which are members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and almost all Qatar's production of liquefied natural gas (LNG). His world.
During their war between 1980 and 1988, Iraq and Iran sought to block the oil exports of the other country in what was then known as the tanker war.
An analyst at RBS Bank said: B. "Although the presence of the Fifth US Fleet in Bahrain is supposed to ensure that the vital waterway remains open, it is likely that in the near future Iran will conduct provocative military maneuvers and resume its nuclear activities as well," said R & B. "All these geopolitical factors may suggest that a tough summer awaits US President Donald Trump as he tries to keep oil prices under control," he said.
The UAE and Saudi Arabia are seeking other ways to avoid passage through the Strait of Hormuz, including the extension of more oil pipelines. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has identified existing pipelines and proposed projects, the most important of which are the non-Strait Hormuz pipelines, the East- Which is a working Saudi pipeline with a capacity of 4.8 million barrels per day, which is already exploited 1.9 million barrels per day, while its unexploited capacity 2.9 million barrels per day, and Abu Dhabi crude oil pipeline, a working line of 1.5 million barrels per day, Million barrels while reaching The unexploited capacity of one million barrels, and the Abqaiq line for natural gas liquids, a Saudi pipeline with a capacity of 300,000 barrels per day. It is fully exploited, and the Iraqi pipeline in Saudi Arabia is a natural gas pipeline. 6.6 million barrels per day, of which 2.7 million barrels are used, while the unused capacity reaches 3.9 million barrels.
The Strait of Hormuz experienced historic tensions. In July 1988, the American warship Vincennes dropped an Iranian aircraft, killing 290 people, all of whom were on board. Tehran said it was a deliberate attack in what Washington said was an incident in which the crew thought the aircraft was a fighter jet, The US said Vincennes was in the area to protect neutral ships from Iranian naval attacks. In early 2008, the United States said Iranian boats threatened its warships after approaching three US Navy vessels in the strait. In June 2008, Iran's Revolutionary Guards commander, On Afar said Iran would impose restrictions on traffic in the strait if it was attacked, and in July 2010 came under the Japanese oil tanker M. Star attack in the strait. In January 2012, Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz in response to US and European sanctions targeting its oil revenues in an attempt to halt Tehran's nuclear program. In May 2015, Iranian vessels fired shots, A tanker was seized in the strait. In July 2018, Iranian President Hassan Rowhani hinted that his country could disrupt oil transit through the Strait of Hormuz in response to US calls to cut exports Iran from Raw to Zero, K. A commander of the Revolutionary Guards said Iran would halt all exports through the strait if Iranian exports were stopped.
