Standard & Poor's: Gulf bank merger is nearing completion
2019/05/29 10:16
Standard & Poor's Ratings said on Tuesday that the current wave of interbank mergers is nearing completion.
"Most of the mergers so far have been between the banks that share the main shareholders, so the number of banks with a similar level of ownership has declined, meaning a decline in mergers and acquisitions," the agency said in a report. The report said that the large remaining banks in the region lack common shareholders, meaning that future mergers will be more difficult unless economic considerations force stakeholders to negotiate integration. The Gulf region has witnessed several banking mergers over the past three years, particularly in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The merger of Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Union National Bank and Al Hilal Bank and the merger of First Bank, Saudi British Bank, (SABB). The reason for the current wave of mergers and acquisitions among banks in the region is the desire of banks to enhance efficiency, privilege and pricing power. More interbank mergers were expected to enhance performance and stability, given the large number of banks in some Gulf banking systems. But it expected a new wave of acquisitions later, for purely economic reasons, but it would take longer to materialize. On the motives behind renewed Gulf banks' interest in mergers over the past 24 months, the agency said it included a decline in economic conditions since the second half of 2014, when oil prices began to fall. According to the report, 6 of the 8 mergers since 2014 have benefited from joint shareholders in the acquired bank and the acquired bank. .
