Pompeo reveals details of his surprise visit to Baghdad

Release Date: 8/5/2019 8:16  818 times read

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made an unannounced visit to Baghdad on Tuesday and met with Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and other senior officials to discuss US security in Iraq.
The visit comes two days after US national security adviser John Bolton said Washington would deploy the Abraham Lincoln bomber squadron and bomber force to the Middle East because of "the real threat posed by the Iranian regime's forces."
Fears of a threat from Iranian troops come after Washington has stepped up sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear program in recent months and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have been labeled a terrorist organization.
"We talked to them about the importance of Iraq ensuring its ability to protect the Americans in their country properly," Pompeo told reporters after meeting Abdul-Mahdi.
A source in the Iraqi government confirmed that Pompeo had met Abdul Mahdi but gave no details.
The aim of the meeting is also to inform Iraqi officials of the "increased threat we have observed" so that they can effectively protect US forces, Pompeo said.
He expressed his country's support for Iraqi sovereignty, saying: "We do not want to enter any party in their country and certainly not by attacking another state inside Iraq."
Asked before the meetings whether there was a danger to the Baghdad government from Iran, although this raised US concerns over the sovereignty of Iraq, he replied: "No. In general, this is our position since the National Security Strategy was launched at the beginning of the administration of President Donald Trump.
When asked about the decision to move the aircraft carrier and bombers to the region, he said that Washington wants to defend its interests from the Iranian threat and ensure that it has the necessary forces to achieve this goal.
"The message we sent to the Iranians, I hope, puts us in a position where we can deter and the Iranians will think twice about attacking US interests," he said. He noted that US intelligence was "very specific" about "imminent attacks".
He said the United States urged Iraq to move quickly to subject the independent factions under Iranian influence to the control of the central government, adding that these factions make Iraq a "less stable country."
He said he had talked with Iraqi officials about their energy and infrastructure needs, particularly in the electricity, oil and natural gas sectors. He said he discussed with them ways to move forward at a rapid pace in projects that could help improve the lives of Iraqis.
For his part, the US Special Envoy to the International Coalition against the former supporter, Brett McGurk, said that Pompeo's visit to Baghdad is to reduce the risk of misunderstanding and also the lack of diplomatic channels with Iran.
"Pompeo's visit to Baghdad is a smart move to meet Iraqi leaders face-to-face," McGork said in a tweet on his Twitter page.
"The visit is for more communication, and this is better to reduce the risk of misunderstanding and misjudgment," he said, noting that "the lack of diplomatic channels with Iran increases the need for indirect communication through Baghdad."
It is noteworthy that the US Secretary of State arrived in Baghdad late on Tuesday night, during which he met with Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and President Barham Saleh.

We renew our blessings to the people of the holy month of Ramadan, the month of God. It is a month in which the believers visit, and the Iraqis make it and sprinkle the tables of the visitors' breakfast, a blessing to Him and a deepening of the spirit of social solidarity between us.

While we are pleased to see the blessed blessings of this holy month bring to our country good and grace and the cities are packed with activity and interaction among the brothers at home, we are very grateful for the calls for breakfast and we offer our apology for attending as we apologize for the establishment of breakfasts by us, may God help us To serve those who need it.

These blessed days of the holy month of Ramadan are an opportunity for the work in which the righteous, the righteous, the righteous, reward the best reward, and work nobler, nobler and closer to God than serving the people and lose the conditions of the needy and preserve their interests and stability.

This is what Pompeo came for in his surprise visit to Baghdad

BAGHDAD, May 8 (KUNA) - US Secretary of State Mark Pompeo revealed on Wednesday the secret of his surprise visit to Baghdad.

"We talked with (Presidents Barham Salih and ministers Adel Abdul Mahdi) about the importance of Iraq ensuring its ability to provide appropriate protection for the Americans in their country," Pompeo told reporters accompanying him on his trip after leaving Baghdad. "Iraqi officials have shown me that they understand that This is their responsibility. "

He said he made the visit to Iraq because Iran is "stepping up its activity" despite its refusal to discuss intelligence in detail.

"We wanted to tell them about the growing threat we saw and give them a little more background about it so they can confirm that they are doing everything they can to protect our team," Pompeo said.

The visit came two days after the United States warned Iran that it would respond with "strong force" to any attack and considered sending the USS Abraham Lincoln to the Middle East as a "clear and unambiguous message" to Tehran.

Bombay's visit to Baghdad, the second since the beginning of the year, came to Iraq amid increasing tension in the region between the United States and Iran, a year after Washington withdrew from a nuclear deal with Tehran.

The United States sent two days ago an aircraft carrier to the Middle East in a maneuver accompanied by a "clear and unambiguous" warning from the White House to Iran.

Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan said he ordered Sunday the deployment of the USS Lincoln Lincoln Naval Strike Group, a naval escort and a group of bombers in response to indications of a serious threat from the Iranian regime.

"As secretary of state, I have a responsibility to keep the safety of officers who work with me every day around the world," Pompeo told reporters on Monday, May 6, 2019. " This includes Erbil and Baghdad, and our facilities in Amman, throughout the Middle East. "

"At any time we receive reports of threats, things that raise concerns, we do everything in our power to make sure that those planned attacks will not happen," he said.

Tehran was quick to denounce the American move, considering sending a US aircraft carrier to the Middle East an old story "has lost its importance," according to the official Iranian agency.

US President Donald Trump decided on May 8, 2018, to withdraw from the International Nuclear Agreement of 2015, which he considered too lenient.

Since then, contrary to the wishes of his European allies, who remain committed to this agreement, the President of the United States has continued to strengthen his "campaign to exert maximum pressure" on the Iranian regime.

Washington took an unprecedented decision last April to include Iran's Revolutionary Guards on its black list of "foreign terrorist organizations."

Iran was quick to respond to the US decision "illegal and reckless," stressing that it is considered "the United States system, a sponsor of terrorism, and US forces in the Middle East terrorist groups."

Iraq is an extraordinary forum for these two countries, which are hostile to each other and allied with Baghdad.
