DC NY Iraq Articles:dd
The unification of the Islamic Dawa Party, one of the largest Shiite parties in Iraq, represents the interest of senior party leaders in order to preserve their status and in order to secure their future political roles. It is also an interest of Iran to preserve this great entity, which is one of the pillars of its influence in Iraq, Who is there and depends on him to secure that influence.
BAGHDAD - Former Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi overturns his options for re-positioning the Iraqi political scene and maintaining his chances of returning to power he left forcibly after the May elections last year in favor of his successor, Adel Abdul Mahdi, although he is fully convinced of the right to a second term as prime minister. What he sees as a great achievement achieved through the leadership of the war on the organization of the preacher, which ended in defeat and the restoration of various areas of Iraq that had occupied.
Iraqi sources attributed the recent gathering between Abadi and his predecessor, former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, to efforts to reunite the Dawa Party, led by al-Maliki, while Abadi has become within him a splinter wing, without declaring it officially.
The sources explained that these efforts were driven by the desire of Haider Abadi to find a stronger platform to defend his position, especially as he has become marginalized and targeted by the current Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, who showed a desire to blur the effects and erase the achievements, according to say close to Abadi, and The second hand is a desire by al-Maliki, and behind him Tehran, to return the Islamic Dawa Party to its position as one of the most able Iraqi political entities to secure Iran's interests in Iraq.
Maliki has a great interest in staying at the head of a united and strong party, at least to maintain his position and ensure immunity against his accountability for the spread of corruption in the country throughout his term as prime minister, and looting of public funds and the drop of nearly one third of Iraq's territory but the organization of the preacher and the resulting disasters Its results will continue for decades.
Haidar Abadi did not earn a little of his separation from the "boss" in the party Nuri al-Maliki and fought the last elections within an independent bloc called the Alliance of victory, as did not achieve close to the leader of the Sadrist movement Moqtada al-Sadr in defense of his position, Which sources say he sought after he was excluded from the premiership.
The Dawa Party has been paralyzed since the pre-election stage when attempts to form a unified list of Maliki and Abadi failed
Ali al-Sunaid, a leader of the reform coalition led by Abadi, said the exit of the coalition from the reform alliance dominated by the Sadrists is possible.
For his part, Abdul Halim Zuhairi, a leader of the Islamic Dawa Party, attributed the subject of the last meeting between al-Maliki and al-Abadi to "partisan affairs" in a hint of efforts to reunite the party.
Zuhairi said that the meeting discussed the issue of convening the General Conference of the Dawa Party likely to hold the conference after the month of Ramadan next. According to informed sources, Abbadi is still reluctant to resolve his position on the continuation of the Dawa Party, although he heads his political office.
She added that the party has been practically disabled since the pre-election stage in May when attempts to form a unified list of Maliki and Abadi failed.
Abadi fears that he will suffer more political and popular losses if the party left now, but he is afraid to go without political cover, in light of the uncertainty surrounding the future of most political parties and entities.
Therefore, according to the sources, Abadi maintains ties with the party, without engaging in his affairs clearly until the maturity of his own political project, which he believes will return to the forefront.
Abadi does not forget his presence in the Iraqi arena, stressing on playing a future role in it. "We will serve our homeland from any location and we will not allow sacrifices to be in vain," he said during a speech at a tribal rally he presided over Saturday in Najaf. He said his achievement in the leadership of the military victory on the preacher, saying, "What is achieved astonished the world and this victory did not come free but with great sacrifices and should not be underestimated."
Abadi's aides say he is preparing for a political project he may be testing during the local elections, where differences remain over schedule, with hopes for the end of the year dwindling.
Abadi's pragmatism in dealing with the Dawa Party seems to have been overshadowed by his secretary-general, Nuri al-Maliki, who sees no impediment to working again with the former prime minister, provided he accepts the role of second-in-command.
The sources of the "Arabs" that prominent leaders in the Dawa Party, like Abdel Halim al-Zahri has made great efforts during the past two months to bring together views on the convening of a general conference to restructure the party. But efforts have not yielded positive results. Many believe that Iran will welcome any process to structure the Dawa Party, provided it maintains Maliki's status as its secretary-general.
It is common in the Iraqi political arena to explicitly refer to Iran and its major local allies, mainly Shiite party leaders and militias, to talk about removing Abadi from power and marginalizing his political role as he was not trusted and accused by Washington.
And circulated Iraqi circles during the last period the possibility of declaring Abadi officially separated from the Dawa Party and the initiative to establish a new party under his leadership based on the amount of popularity he managed to get during the years of his rule.
The sources say that Abadi's split from the Islamic call will not be without results for the party, which lost power for the first time since 2005, prompting senior "preachers" including Abdel Halim Zuhairi and Abujaafar al-Rikabi to lead efforts to reunite the party and prevent its disintegration, Ammar al-Hakim came out and founded his own movement under the name of "the stream of wisdom".

Iraqi American Christians ask Pence to block deportation of Iraqis

16 April 2019
Chaldeans and elected officials in metro Detroit are asking the U.S. government to block the deportations of up to 1,000 Iraqi nationals.
"For many people, this may be life or death," Martin Manna, president of the Chaldean Community Foundation in Sterling Heights, told the Free Press. "All we ask is they get additional time to get their due process in courts. ... They will likely face persecution in Iraq."
After a federal appeals court last week ruled against the Iraqis in a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Iraqi American Christians and their supporters in Congress and the Michigan Legislature are mobilizing to lobby the Department of Homeland Security to halt the removal of Iraqis with criminal records.
The decision by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals went into effect on Tuesday, which means many Iraqis could be deported at any time.
Manna spent two days this week in Washington meeting with members of Congress in an effort to craft legislation that could halt the deportation.
Also this week, four House members, three of them from Michigan, sent a letter to Vice President Mike Pence asking him to help block the deportation. And some legislators are now working on a potential bill that would ask the Trump administration to halt deportations based on a policy known as Deferred Enforced Departurepreviously used to halt the deportations of Liberian immigrants.
"We write to urge you to halt the wholesale detention and deportation of Iraqis living in the United States, including numerous Iraqi Christians and other religious and ethnic minorities," the letter reads.

The 4th Infantry Division reveals the details of the capture of Saddam Hussein

April 16 - Sixteen years after the US invasion of Iraq, a number of American experts admitted that the invasion was wrong and that the price of Saddam Hussein was too high.

Esquire published memoirs of US military personnel involved in the arrest of Saddam Hussein.

Major General Ray Odero, commander of the 4th Infantry Division, said Iraqis were afraid of Saddam Hassan while in power, and when they disappeared they were afraid to return to power. The question of the length of his disappearance has instilled terror among the Iraqi people.

Major Bryan Reid, chief of staff of the 4th Infantry Division, said immediately that the intelligence agency believed Saddam had returned to where he had grown up.

"We relied entirely on the intelligence obtained from Saddam Hussein's followers," Sergeant First Sergeant Eric Maddox said in a search for Saddam Hussein. "We went to new people to unravel the mystery of his disappearance. We went to the family of a member of the family, Personal escorts of Saddam Hussein.

"Two Iraqi businessmen came in June, we sat with them in an air-conditioned room, and over two hours of talking with them, they gave us a list of people close to Saddam Hussein and who relied on him to protect him, including friends and relatives," said Lt. Col. Steve Russell.

The US military focused on two people, including Mohammed Ibrahim al-Musallat, the personal facilities, using poker cards to set goals, with each card showing a specific person, said Colonel James Hickey.

By the end of the spring, US military intelligence indicated that Saddam Hussein was on a farm 16 kilometers from Tikrit.

"When we arrived at the farm, it was full of residential buildings," said 1st Sgt. Sean Schuffner of the 4th Infantry Division. "When we walked, we noticed that the backyard was recently dug.

Major Bryan Reid at the farm found a financial sum of $ 8 million.

"We found four boxes full of jewels," said Fred Fillmore, a translator for the 4th Infantry Division. Most of the soldiers were stunned, as they did not see such a quantity of gold.

Sergeant Shawn Schofner found documents, birth certificates, marriages and personal photos of Saddam Hussein's family. As well as jewelry belonging to Saddam's first wife Sajida.

After the arrest of Ibrahim al-Musallat and his agreement to hand over Saddam Hussein, Task Force 121 and the 4th Infantry Force were on full alert.

"I'm Saddam Hussein, the president of Iraq, and I'm ready for negotiations," Lieutenant Colonel Steve Rossell said when we found the hideout.

Major Brian Reid called George Tenet, the former CIA director, late at night, around 10 or 11 o'clock. Everyone was waiting to be checked to make sure that the person who had been arrested was Saddam and not his like.

"We took his fingerprints and a DNA test and picked up dozens of pictures. Saddam Hussein was very tired and in terrible physical condition," said FBI agent James Davis.

Dr. Mark Green went to the whereabouts of Saddam Hussein at the base, where it was impossible to approach the cell to gather dozens of soldiers at the entrance to the cell and take photographs.

"When I was a child, I wanted to become a doctor, but the politics deepened deep inside me," said Dr. Mark Green.

Dr. Mark Green and Saddam Hussein spoke for a few hours, then asked Saddam about the direction of the qiblah and began to pray but did not kneel down.

Among the proposals of Paul Bremer, head of the Coalition Provisional Authority, Saddam Hussein was transported aboard the Fifth Fleet across the Persian Gulf. But it was impossible to do so, because he would be tried by an Iraqi court.

"We were confident we did everything right," said Major General Ray Odero. But we were wrong. Iraq started a civil war and many died.

On July 18, 2005, Saddam Hussein was formally charged by Saddam Hussein with a "genocide" of the people of Dujail in 1982.

The United States welcomed the decision of the Iraqi Court of Cassation to ratify the death sentence of Saddam Hussein in the Dujail case. White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said the date of ratification of the death penalty "represents an important milestone in the efforts of the Iraqi people to replace the rule of law by tyrant."

On November 5, 2006, the Iraqi High Criminal Court issued its decision to hang Saddam Hussein and sentenced Barzan Ibrahim al-Hassan, former intelligence chief, and Awad Hamad al-Bandar al-Saadoun, the president of the Revolutionary Court, to death.
