Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan admitted on Sunday evening that his ruling party, the Justice and Development Party (AKP), was missing in a number of municipalities in important cities, hours after counting began in local elections.
"We recognize that we have won the hearts of the Turkish people in the areas where we won and that we have not achieved the desired success in the areas we have lost and will determine our future course in light of that," he said in a speech.
"The AKP has again won the first place in the elections by a large margin since the November 2002 elections," he said. "We won in some municipalities and we lost in others. In both cases, this is the will of the people and this is the nature of democracy.
"The results of the local elections showed that our Kurdish brothers have confirmed that they will not hand over their will to the terrorist organization Bai Ka Ka, and lost again who are trying to tear down our people by destabilizing its unity and solidarity."
State media reported that the ruling party is heading to lose control of the capital Ankara in the municipal elections, for the first time in 25 years.
NRP candidate Mansour Javash of the Ankara mayor received 49.8 percent of the votes, compared with 47.8 for rival Mohamed Oz Haski, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) candidate, NTV television reported.
The capital was seen as a major battleground in the election, a test of Erdogan's popularity, amid an economic slowdown and rising inflation.
Twelve parties competed in the elections: Justice and Development, the Republican People, the National Movement, Democratic Peoples, Happiness, Independent Turkey, the Grand Union, the Democratic Left, the Iyi, the Turkish Communist and the Homeland.
