Abadi: We may look for mechanisms to deal with Iran that do not conflict with sanctions

2018/08/17 00:14

Baghdad today - follow-up

The spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office, Saad al-Hadithi, that Iraq may discuss in the future certain mechanisms for business dealings with Iran in a manner that does not contradict the US sanctions on the latter.

Al-Hadithi, in a press statement followed by (Baghdad today), that "Iraq can not violate the rules dealing with the dollar in financial and banking transactions and remittances in the event of sanctions against any country in this regard."

On August 16, 2018, President Fuad Masoum commented on the way Iraq would deal with the ban on Iran, saying that bank transfers were outside the control of the Iraqi government.

"There are decisions outside the control of the Iraqi government on the US embargo against Iran," Masoom was quoted as saying in an exclusive interview with Al-Alam television.

"Certain decisions such as bank transfers are outside the control of the Iraqi government," Masoum said, stressing "the need to take into account the specificity of the historical Iraqi-Iranian relations that bind the two peoples."

He noted that "Iraq is not pleased with the Trump decisions to impose a ban on Tehran and that this embargo will harm Iraq."

He pointed out that "trade relations between Tehran and Baghdad will not be affected by the embargo," stressing that "the interests and relations of historical, social and political ties between the two countries."

The Prime Minister Haider Abadi, announced on Monday, August 13, 2018 that Baghdad partially take into account US sanctions against Iran, and refuses to use the dollar in its dealings with Tehran.

On Thursday, 9 August 2018, the Central Bank of Iraq notified commercial banks of the prohibition of dollar transactions with Iranian lending institutions pursuant to US sanctions. At the same time, the Central Bank of Iraq has not stopped using the euro in dealing with Iran, which, he says, depends on the requirements of the ECB and correspondent banks.

The United States has since Monday, August 6, 2018, imposed large-scale sanctions on Iran, which it had suspended earlier, after reaching a comprehensive joint action plan on Iran's nuclear program in 2015.

US President Donald Trump announced in early May Washington's withdrawal from an agreement with Iran over its nuclear program. And subsequently decided to reinstate all sanctions imposed on Tehran, including secondary sanctions, that affect other countries dealing with Iran.

Iraq annually purchases goods from neighboring Iran for up to $ 6.6 billion. In addition to foodstuffs, Iran supplies cars and spare parts to the Iraqi market, as well as household appliances. Every year, two to three million Iranians visit Iraq, an important source of foreign currency entering the country.

The United States describes Iraq as one of its key allies in the Middle East. After its invasion in 2003, it provided some weapons and trained the security forces to fight the terrorist "Da'ash" organization.

The crisis in Turkey is being caused by the US Fed, and we are only at the beginning
Business Insider
The US Federal Reserve's balance sheet since the 2008 crisis. The US Fed is unwinding its balance sheet, driving up the price of the dollar. This is the underlying cause of the Turkish lira crisis. Lots of countries, like Turkey, have external debt denominated in US dollars. The higher the dollar goes, the more expensive this debt becomes, and the closer we get to "contagion" in the shakier emerging markets. The Fed has only just begun. Washington threatens Iraq with Iran's sanctions

August 16, 2018

WASHINGTON - The United States has threatened Iraq with sanctions similar to those it has imposed on Iran if it does not comply, in response to Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi's announcement to continue trade with Tehran.
The State Department sent a stern warning to the Iraqi government if it refused to comply with US sanctions against Iran, saying that violators of the sanctions regime could themselves be subject to sanctions. State Department spokeswoman Heather Neuert said Abadi's comments on continued trade with Iran, saying those who violated the sanctions regime could themselves be subject to sanctions.
"You know our warnings about Iran and trade with them, and we will continue to prosecute countries for any breach of the sanctions we are imposing against Iran," Nuerte told a news conference in Washington last night.
Abadi said on Monday that Baghdad was partly taking into account US sanctions against Iran and refusing to use the dollar in its dealings with Tehran. He pointed out that Iraq's decision on US sanctions against Iran does not mean "adherence to those sanctions." "Iraq's decision is not to deal with Iran in the currency of the dollar and not to abide by US sanctions against it," he said. "Iraq will abandon the dollar in its trade with Iran," he said.

The US Embassy issued an explanatory statement on Iraq's violation of sanctions against Iran

Thursday, 16 August 2018 02:04 pm

The US Embassy in Baghdad issued an explanation on remarks by US State Department spokeswoman Heather Neuert about Iraq's relationship with sanctions against Iran.
The embassy confirmed there was no violation of US sanctions against Iran.
The embassy said in an explanatory statement: "After reviewing the question and answer to the question and following up the subject with the Deputy Ambassador, the clarification of the subject is as follows:" In its response to the question referred to efforts to resolve outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Government of Iraq " .
"Countries that violate sanctions will be held accountable," the statement said, referring to the partial sanctions on Iran.
"As you know, the sanctions are to deal in dollars with Iran, and as you know, the prime minister said that Iraq will not deal with the dollar with Iran, so there is no breach of sanctions," she said.
The US embassy in Baghdad, according to the statement: "The way the Iraqi media conveyed this news is inaccurate."
US State Department spokeswoman Heather Neuert commented on Prime Minister Haider Abadi's comments on continued trade with Iran, saying: "Violators of the sanctions regime can themselves be subject to sanctions."
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Monday that Baghdad partly respects US sanctions against Iran and refuses to use the dollar in its dealings with Tehran.
Last Thursday, the Central Bank of Iraq (CBE) notified commercial banks of a ban on dollar transactions with Iranian lenders under US sanctions. At the same time, the Central Bank of Iraq has not stopped using the euro in dealing with Iran, which, he says, depends on the requirements of the ECB and correspondent banks.
The United States has since last week imposed large-scale sanctions on Iran, which it had suspended earlier, after reaching a comprehensive joint action plan on Iran's nuclear program in 2015.

8-17-2018   Intel Gurus Delta and Frank26   Article quote: "The value of the Iraqi currency fell from 1200 dinars to the dollar last Sunday, to 1210 dinars now..."   THEY HAVE TO MOVE FASTER NOW...   DO SOMETHING OR FALL OUT OF 2% COMPLIANT!!!
8-16-2018   Newshound Guru  Kaperoni‏  Concerns rise over the stability of the dinar.  Todays market rate is reported at 1210 to $1. Dangerously close to falling out of IMF compliance.  Some articles are even reporting 1212 to $1...Which is only 2 dinar from 1214 the max under the 2% rule.

8-16-2018   Newshound Guru Adam Montana   Article:  "Iraq invests $ 24.5 billion in US Treasuries"  Why would Iraq be investing in US Treasuries? That's a good question, and I think the answer is obvious - both the US and Iraq are going forward in a positive direction, so it's a smart play.  We are on the smart side of that play, and here's the best part:  I don't have to beat that drum - Iraq is doing it for me.

8-16-2018   Guest Guru Mark   It's important that they build a budget so they can create monetary policy for the Central Bank.  They're not building an exchange rate in the budget...they are basing it on what they have today.  You're not going to find it in any budget...never been in any budget in the past and I don't believe it's going to be in any budget going forward.  When they eventually do this it's a process...and when they do make the change they will have under discussion and under ideas of how they are going to make these changes and they will ultimately alter the budget based on the new value of the currency.  So if you're...thinking I have to look at the budget to see if it's in there....don't.  It's not going to be there, it never has and never will be.

8-16-2018  Newshound/Intel Guru Mnt Goat   As the breaking news evolves, we will see more and more emphasis on the Iraq / Iran relationship and the impacts of the sanctions. I am telling everyone right now...that unless the CBI moves ahead on the reinstatement of the dinar quickly, once the govt is formed, we will be in a situation that the November Iranian sanctions will delay the CBI once again possibility until 2019.

8-16-2018 Newshound Guru Adam Montana [...do you really think Iraq CBI will RV their currency during 2018 and/or early 2019?...] For the record, I do believe that we are in the final stretch. It may seem like they have been kicking the can down the road, but when you stop to examine all the details, it really makes sense. If they had Revalued their currency in 2013, or 14, it would have been a disaster! They didn't have the infrastructure, the stability, or anything else they needed to make it a success. Today, we're in a different boat. NOW it is possible, and before it was not.
